What do candidates propose to save the American worker?

No sector in the U.S. economy seems to be immune to layoffs. The latest layoffs come from electronics retailer Circuit City Stores Inc., which announced Monday it would close 155 stores and lay off as many as 7,300. Other retailers in distress include Tweeter Home Entertainment Group Inc., Linens 'N Things Inc. and Mervyn's Holdings LLC, which are all liquidating. Retailers aren't suffering alone either. Last week Chrysler LLC announced plant closures. Meanwhile, the banking industry has been hit hard with the disappearance of investment banks Bear Stearns Cos. and Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and the pending merger of...

Why the next treasury chief needs some charisma

With only two weeks before the presidential election, chatter about who will succeed Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson is again heating up, particularly because of the sense that whoever wins will select one quickly. Given national polls showing Sen. Barack Obama winning the election, and more importantly state-by-state poll aggregation sites like 270towin.com showing Obama exceeding the necessary 270 Electoral College votes, most of the chatter is focusing on who is likely to be on his list. However, what once was a short list has become a much longer list as evidenced by a poll on blog Clusterstock. While the...

An oracle for treasury? How about an egghead instead?

As expected, the economy took center stage during Tuesday's presidential debate when Republican Sen. John McCain and Democratic Sen. Barack Obama faced off in a so-called "town hall" debate. Evidently the public, which submitted many of the questions moderator Tom Brokaw posed, was even interested in who will replace Hank Paulson as the next treasury secretary....

McCain was knee-deep in UNE-P

One of the narratives Democrats have sought to exploit paints Republican presidential candidate John McCain as a man who doesn't understand the Internet.McCain himself has said he doesn't check his email or go to websites and he has his family or staff help him retrieve online information. It is likely true that McCain has a limited grasp of Internet culture--he's probably never logged on to his own campaign website nor is he likely check out what the blogs are saying about veep choice Sarah Palin. ...

Do PE professionals really support Obama?

The results are in from the peHUB Presidential Preference Poll and the winner is -- ta-dah -- Sen. Barack Obama by a razor-thin margin. However, does it really tell us anything about either private equity political preferences or the election? Not really....

Is there more than one dealmaker on McCain's VP list?

As Sen. Barack Obama takes his campaign on a world tour, and with it much of the press corps, the blogosphere is abuzz about a Robert Novak report that Republican rival Sen. John McCain may announce his vice presidential candidate this week. The leading contender (according  to Novak): dealmaker-turned-politician Mitt Romney....

Would McCain tap dealmaker as VP?

There is a lot of chatter about who presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain may tap as vice president. Some of the suggestions such as Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates are likely facetious. One of the more serious suggestions is the recurring talk of former dealmaker Mitt Romney as the likely running mate as recently put forth by a Politico.com story. ...
