Where's the dealmaker now: Leon Black

Leon Black of Apollo was certainly not a nobody back in 1999, but he wasn't the mogul with the multibillion dollar global private equity and hedge fund empire that he is today.

Apollo cashes out big in KKR buyout

The debut of The Daily Deal was also a good day for Leon Black. As we reported that day, his PE firm Apollo Management LP secured about a $200 million profit from the sale of Alliance Imaging Inc., a provider of diagnostic imaging services, to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. in an $850 million leveraged recapitalization. (Read the complete story in The Deal Pipeline; subscription required).Apollo, which had acquired Alliance in December 1997, merged the company with SMT Health Services Inc. in May 1999.KKR eventually took Alliance public in late July 2001. Apollo's Black again plays a foil for Icahn

Despite activist investor, blogger and amateur comedian Carl Icahn's lawsuit against Apollo Management LP-backed real estate brokerage Realogy Corp., which does business as Century 21, Coldwell Banker and Corcoran, over its debt exchange offer, there is no love lost between Icahn and Apollo's founder Leon Black (pictured), who both go back about 25 years when Black was a young banker at Drexel Burnham & Lambert. Icahn made light of their history in one of his amateur comedy routines at Caroline's a few years ago. Watch the video after the break. - Matthew Wurtzel...

According to The New York Times, a private equity maven and disciple of Michael Milken is leading a wave of buyout firms scoffing up rent-controlled real estate and strong-arming people out of their homes, all in the pursuit of a fast buck. Of course, there are some problems with the story starting with the accusations laid against Leon Black. ...

Carl Icahn to finally join blogosphere

The highly anticipated -- at least by Dealscape staff -- Icahn Report blog, which the strongly opinionated activist financier Carl Icahn first announced in January, is reportedly only a week or two away from launching, reports Reuters. Icahn's attorneys allegedly held up the launch. We can't wait to put it in our RSS readers because we're hoping it will include more humorous anecdotes about fellow dealmakers like Apollo Management LLP's Leon Black and attorney Joe Jamail. - The editors...

Icahn hints at why Leon Black is taking Apollo public

Earlier in the week, buyout firm Apollo Management LLP filed to go public. To put the news in perspective, Dealscape highlighted an exclusive video of Carlyle Group founder David Rubenstein explaining the impetus for private equity firms going public. In short, Rubenstein compared it to the rush of investment bank IPOs in the 1970s. However, Carl Icahn may have a different opinion of why Apollo founder Leon Black (pictured) is taking his firm public. Watch the video of Icahn explaining what drives Black after the jump. - Matthew Wurtzel ...
