United Airlines raises financing through asset sales

The parent of United Airlines has moved to shore up its cash position, saying Wednesday it has secured $275 million in fresh cash via a series of transactions....

Liquidation is not the answer for United Airlines

It is hard to tell if Roben Farzad is speaking on behalf of investors, customers or employees when suggesting that the parent of United Airlines Inc. should be liquidated. It is harder still to say which of these groups, if any, would benefit from his plan to put the troubled carrier out of its misery....

Investors applaud UAL's fundraising, ignore quarterly loss

Such is life in the airline industry these days that a company can report a $2.73 billion quarterly loss and still see its stock climb 50%. That is what happened with United Airlines Inc. parent UAL Corp. on Tuesday, which saw its stock soar despite a massive loss tied to $2.3 billion in noncash accounting charges. Excluding the one-time charges, the company's per share loss beat expectations, but its quarterly revenue was a little short of expectations. ...

UAL-US Air deal unravels as markets remain quiet

The airline sector is falling fast, attributed primarily to the hike in fuel prices, labor costs and congested skies. The latest casualties of the airline sector include US Airways Group Inc. [LCC] and UAL Corp., which abandoned their proposed merger. Meanwhile, British business airline Silverjet plc suspended flights because of a lack of cash to operate. Overall, the markets cautiously pushed forward as the Dow increased 15.22, or .1%, to 12,660.39, and the Nasdaq inched up 14.50%, or .6%, to 2,522.82. Here's a closer of the performance of Deal Stocks in Friday midday trading:...

UAL, US Airways talks may still be on

Don't count a deal between UAL Corp. and US Airways Group Inc. out yet. Despite reports Wednesday that talks between the two airlines were on hold, the CEOs of the two companies are expected to meet Thursday to discuss the progress of their discussions, according to a wsj.com report. If the meeting goes well, the companies could approach their boards in mid-June for permission to move forward with a transaction, according to the story....

Flight attendants oppose United-US Airways talks

Flight attendants from United Airlines Inc. and US Airways Group Inc. have joined the chorus of labor opposition to a rumored combination of the two airlines, urging managements to get their own houses in order before considering dealmaking....

Any UAL deal will be faster than Delta-Northwest talks

Followers of Delta Air Lines Inc.'s drawn-out negotiation to buy Northwest Airlines Corp., which played out for more than two months before an announcement was made, know all too well the danger of putting too much stock in airline gossip. But the rumor mill was churning again on Friday with talk of potential dealmaking involving United Airlines parent UAL Corp. and US Airways Group Inc....

Wallflower United still looking for a partner

Note to would-be airline acquirers. United Air Lines Inc. is still available. The world's second-largest airline, which has been looking for a merger for the better part of two years now, thought it had a partner lined up in Continental Airlines Inc. But that deal is contingent on Delta Air Lines Inc. combining with Northwest Airlines Corp., a move that would void the golden share Northwest holds in Continental that allows it to block any Continental deal....

Continental-UAL deal waits in the wings of Delta-NWA merger

While Delta Air Lines Inc. and Northwest Airlines Corp. management wait on their pilots to reach an agreement before announcing their merger, the rest of the industry is beginning to line up like planes on a runway to take flight with their own mergers. United Air Lines Inc. and Continental Airlines Inc. are deep in talks toward a combination that would quickly surpass Delta-Northwest as the world's biggest airline, according to sources. Like Delta-Northwest, a United-Continental deal could include monetary support from a European partner, in this case Deutsche Lufthansa AG, and would combine United's strengths across the Pacific with...

Food shopping

Ketchup titan Heinz Corp. said Tuesday it will sell its frozen foods unit to Lehman Brothers Merchant Banking for $506 million. Reports that the company was mulling a sale to hone its U.S. focus first surfaced in September and the pair announced earlier this month they were in exclusive deal talks. The news comes at an interesting time for food companies. In January, The Deal reported bids and interest were dwindling for the world’s leading pineapple purveyor, Fresh Del Monte, after initial buzz the auction could draw $1.8 billion for the company. Last year, the virtually unheard of agricultural company...
