BA to fly solo?

If the markets don't want to play along, British Airways plc captain Willie Walsh would just rather take his airline and go home. The executive this weekend said the current market caps of his company and takeover target Iberia Líneas Aéreas de España SA indicate that a merger would give Iberia just over 50% of the combined group and BA investors just under 50%. Walsh told the Financial Times on Friday, such an arrangement would be unacceptable to BA's owners and that he felt under no pressure to make the deal work. ...

Aer Lingus trumpets work force solidarity

Irish airline Aer Lingus Group plc, under siege from nonunionized rival Ryanair Holdings Ltd., did not immediately respond to the €200 million ($254 million) sweetener Ryanair added to its €748 million bid for the company Friday. Instead it announced the outcome of a ballot of its own, unionized, workers, which came out in favor of efficiencies and reformed working practices. The former state airline believes the costs cuts will save €25 million a year. ...

Southwest's New York plans could be muted

Southwest Air not feeling the luv

All streaks must eventually come to an end. That day finally arrived for Southwest Airlines Co., which posted its first quarterly loss in 17 years. Still it was an amazing streak considering the turmoil the industry faced during that period, such as soaring fuel and labor costs as well as security issues following the 9/11 attacks. The end of the record didn't faze shareholders all that much though, as the stock had climbed over 5% to $12.20 in Thursday afternoon trading. Lately, the airline sector continues to be in a state of flux as airlines have folded or gone...

Undoubtedly when the postmortem is written on the current stock market collapse, there will be examples of industries and companies who fell not on fundamentals but rather were simply caught in the downdraft. Liquidation is not the answer for United Airlines

It is hard to tell if Roben Farzad is speaking on behalf of investors, customers or employees when suggesting that the parent of United Airlines Inc. should be liquidated.
