Is Napster in play?

Last month, Napster's market cap fell below its cash on hand. That prompted speculation that an eager hedge fund might want to seize the company just to dismantle it, or that it's ripe for a takeover.

Lionel and Neil Young roll down the tracks together

We know he's a rock 'n' roll star and all that, but why is Neil Young's continued stake in the now post-bankruptcy Lionel LLC need to be such a mystery?...

Lionel: Long may you run

Rock 'n roll legend Neil Young will no longer have his own trains to play with under the Christmas tree. Lionel LLC, the famous model train maker, left bankruptcy on May 1. But Young, who owned a 20% stake in the company, isn't any longer part of its post-Chapter 11 life....

All together now

Music-related social networking sites are shaking up the music business and could be the paradigm for the future. At first, Joy Walshe's riff sounds like that sorry refrain so common among musicians, however talented they may be. The London-based singer-songwriter doesn't have a record contract, had a busted deal with an independent label that ended up in court, scores gigs where and when she can and works in an office to get by financially....

Heavy hands

Regulators continue to assert their hand in mergers and acquisitions Thursday, on both sides of the pond. Dubai International Capital LLC confirmed this morning that the U.S. has launched a national security investigation into its pending $1.2 billion acquisition of a U.K.-based precision-engineering company with U.S. subsidiaries, according to published reports. In related news, the debate over the Dubai ports deal, which would give a United Arab Emirates-owned company control of operations of six U.S. ports, sparked Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., to introduce legislation...

Feb. 15, 1812: Future blue-box packer Charles Lewis Tiffany is born in Killingly, Conn. After working in his father’s business as a young man, Tiffany moved to New York and, with partner John B. Young, opened a chichi stationery store dubbed Tiffany & Young at 259 Broadway. In 1845, the store published its first “Catalogue of Useful and Fancy Articles,” which distinguished Tiffany from his competitors—who sold only “Superfluous and Loathsome Crappe.” Eight years later, he acquired a silver business and gave the combined entity its current name: Tiffany & Co. In 1887, Tiffany took advantage of a quirk in...

Visteon's magic numbers

Don't be fooled by the numbers, Visteon Corp. is still a troubled company. However, the auto parts maker was back in the black in the fourth quarter, but only because it sold 23 plants to former parent Ford Motor Co. In what Bloomberg called "accounting magic" Visteon earned $1.34 billion, or $10.25 per share, for the three months ended Dec. 31. That compared with a loss of $138 million, or $1.10 per share, for the fourth quarter of 2004. But when the curtain is pulled aside, and the Ford deal is ignored, along with interest expenses, taxes, and certain charges,...
