Global markets tank

World markets tumbled Friday on growing concern that no amount of government intervention will be able to stave off a global recession. In Europe, Germany's DAX index fell 10.76% while the French CAC40 fell 10%, and the FTSE 100 in the U.K. fell 8.67%. In Asia Japan's Nikkei 225 index slid 9.6%. Wall Street followed on the same course, with Dow Jones Industrial Average futures down the maximum 550 points in premarket trading and other U.S. indexes reacting in a similar fashion....


Bond insurer shares skyrocket on not-so-bad mortgage news

The street continues to grasp for reasons to invest in companies tied to the mortgage mess. This was apparent as bond insurers, which have suffered of late due to their wraps of mortgage-backed securities, soared on Thursday, following news that mortgage insurer MGIC Investment Corp.'s roughly $34.4 million loss for the first quarter ended March 31 was a fraction of that anticipated by analysts. MGIC's stock jumped 18.95% on the news to $12.49 per share. The broader market had mixed result as the Dow Jones Industrial Average inched up 1.22 to 12,620.49....

While nations grapple with the effects of a faltering U.S. dollar, the meteoric rise in oil prices and turmoil in the credit markets, one economy is worried about another leading indicator: New York Yankees pitcher Chien-Ming Wang's performance last night against the Boston Red Sox....
