Four years after selling its original venture capital division, Lucent is back in the form of Alcatel Lucent Ventures. Formed about a year ago to commercialize some of the best technology languishing within Bell Labs, the unit is unveiling its first project today.
Called Project Evros, Alcatel-Lucent has developed a PC card used to secure and remotely control laptops. The card is always on and is required to operate the laptop. It has GPS capability so an IT manager can see where the computer is if it's stolen. It can also be used to remotely control the computer. Dor Skuler, the general manager of the project, told me that some of these features are available now but no one offers a card that offers all of it in one.
The card will be shown today at the Demo conference. Alcatel Lucent will then determine whether it will spin the project out with the help of venture capitalists as an independent startup, keep it within the Alcatel Lucent fold or license it out to others.
