The big news from the BIO International Convention in Boston Tuesday was the
appearance of Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (pictured at left) on the trade
show floor to announce a
$1
billion state fund for basic science research. The governor’s presence was
only noticeable because of the sudden tripling, or what seemed like it, of
various uniformed officers sprinkled throughout the building. Police presence
has been heavy throughout the conference, not just outside the cavernous
facility for traffic control reasons, but at the various hotels as luminaries
come and go (more on this later). As Gov. Patrick regaled the media mobs on
the show floor, special ops guys from the city’s Finest watched warily from
the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center’s glassed-in sky walk
overlooking the press conference. A few on their cell phones talked about
things that didn’t sound like official crime-fighting business. One attendee
walked past and said with a chuckle, “Hey guys, how’s the overtime pay this
week?” Only one cop bothered to reply: “No comment.” —Alex Lash

So the Governor shows and is all about attracting investments, which are decided by people, to Mass. Maybe Boston's Finest and the remaining Law Enforcement in town (especially TSA at the airport) should sport friendly, peaceful behavior instead of their martial passive-aggressiveness (or verbal abuse offered by TSA). Just in case they care that I bring my investment dollars back to town.
