Intel's Vietnam ventures

Share     E-Mail    Discussion (3)     Print Story

Intel Capital's $36 million investment last November with Texas Pacific Group in Vietnam's FPT Telecom remains the most prominent venture capital investment in Vietnam, but Vietnam Express News reports that the chip giant's venture arm is looking hard at further investment in the Southeast Asian country's telecommunications, broadband, software outsourcing and other industries.

Intel Asia managing director Sudheer Kumar Kuppam and Lee Sessions, director of integration and portfolio development at Intel Capital, told executives attending Intel Capital Technology Day in Hanoi, an event to introduce foreign firms to the local IT market, that with technology development getting more expensive in other Asian markets, Vietnam will draw increased interest.

The event featured six Intel portfolio companies and partners from outside Vietnam that also expressed interest in the market, both as a potential development destination and as a market for their products. Part of the strategy of Intel's investment in FPT was for it to act as a gateway to bring other partners into the market, where they could take advantage of FPT's outsourcing services and ties to a string of technological training schools with 28,000 enrolled students. - Clifford Carlsen
