Google invests in Ubiquisys

  Share     E-Mail    Discussion    Print Story

As Google Inc. strives to crush its search engine rivals, buying anything and everything that might bolster its increasingly diverse business, the company on Friday made an interesting investment in a mobile technology company. Less than a year after securing a first round of funding, Ubiquisys Ltd., a developer of third-generation femtocell access points for the residential market, announced a Series B round totaling $25 million. Ubiquisys' first-round backers, Accel Partners, Atlas Venture and Advent Venture Partners, were joined by Google in the investment.

Ubiquisys' technology gives mobile users Internet coverage in the home using their 3G cell phones. The company's device plugs into an existing home broadband gateway or is built into a gateway product that includes WiFi, DSL, Ethernet, phone ports and USB. Femtocells are small devices that plug into home broadband connections and provide high-quality 3G coverage.

Ubiquisys has raised $37 million in venture money, including $12 million in September—Cheryl Meyer
