solar.jpgGreenTech Media is reporting that venture capitalists invested a record $2.8 billion in renewable energy companies in the third quarter. The fourth quarter hasn't started out too badly either.

Ausra Inc., a provider of large-scale solar thermal energy systems, said Wednesday it has secured $60.6 million in new financing. KERN Partners led the funding, joined by Generation Investment Management, Starfish Ventures, as well as founding investors Khosla Ventures and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Those firms poured $40 million into the company last year.

Proceeds from the latest round will bankroll completion of a 5-megawatt solar thermal power project in Bakersfield, Calif. Ausra provides solar power, steam and energy systems for industrial processes and utility-scale electricity generation. -- David Shabelman
