Annual Forbes VC list has few surprises

  Share     E-Mail    Discussion    Print Story

The rich get richer, as familiar names top Forbes Magazine's annual Midas List of the top 100 investors and other luminaries. Kleiner Perkins' John Doerr and Sequoia's Michael Moritz landed in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively, switching places from last year's ranking.

Ram Shiram of Sherpalo takes the third spot, up from No. 4 last year, and is among five of the individuals in the top 10 from non-traditional institutional venture capital partnerships. Rounding out the group are David Cheriton of Stanford University, Andreas Von Bechtelsheim of Sun Microsystems Inc., Larry Sonsini of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati PC and angel investor Ronald Conway, while General Atlantic LLC's William Ford and ePlanet Ventures' Assad Jamal and Mayfield Fund's Navin Chaddha represent the old school.

One wonders, though, if editors compiling the subjective list may have been trying a little too hard to inject some diversity in that elite group, as the entire rest of the Top 50 come from traditional institutional funds, save Bob Gunderson of law firm Gunderson Dettmer. - Clifford Carlsen
