New YorkÕs FiX8, a division of virtual communications technology provider Mobinex Inc., has added $2 million from KoreaÕs SK Telecom to its Series A financing. The round closes with $5 million. Additionally, SKT awarded FIX8 a contract to develop three-dimensional avatar animation technology for SKT, which will be used enhance the companyÕs mobile and online communications offerings. FIX8Õs content offerings include virtual communications technology that digitizes human expressions by Webcam in real time.
Yardbarker Inc., a social sports news and opinion web site, has closed a $6 million Series B funding. New investor Draper Fisher Jurvetson of Menlo Park, Calif. led the round, joined by existing investors Russ Siegelman, a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers; Ronnie Lott through SC Investments Consulting of San Francisco; Jarl Mohn; Labrador Ventures of Palo Alto, Calif.; and Baseline Ventures of San Francisco. Josh Stein, a managing director at DFJ, will join YardbarkerÕs board. The company plans to use the funds to expand its engineering and sales teams. Yardbarker focuses on sports content and has professional athletes that blog exclusively on its site.
Singapore-based biopharmaceutical company Moleac has raised $3.5 million in Series A financing from a group of European and Asian private investors, as well as Hunza Ventures. The company will use the proceeds to market its first product, NeuroAid. NeuroAid is a natural medicine developed in China that the company claims improves neurological and functional recovery following a stroke. The capital will also fund international clinical trials to demonstrate the efficacy of NeuroAid during the acute stage of stroke. The company plans to market its second product, a smoking cessation medical device, in 2009. -- George White
