EverSpin Technologies announced Monday that it has spun off from parent Freescale Semiconductor Inc., itself a former unit of Motorola Corp., and raised $20 million in Series A venture capital to establish itself as an independent memory chip company.

New Venture Partners LLC of Murray Hill, N.J., led the deal, joined by Sigma Partners of Menlo Park, Calif., Lux Capital of New York, Draper Fisher Jurvetson of Menlo Park, and Epic Ventures of Salt Lake City. Austin, Texas-based Freescale will retain a significant equity stake in the company.

Details of the spinoff were not disclosed, but Chandler, Ariz.-based EverSpin will take along a team of about 50 people and a developed product that has been shipping since last summer. It will continue to work on related technology in joint development and manufacturing with Freescale.
