On Tuesday Hewlett-Packard Co. said it would spend an undisclosed amount on security software company, SPI Dynamics Inc. The same day it also announced a set of security products aimed at business customers. However, HP, which says it only plans to make small acquisitions in the security sector, denies that it has a broad security strategy, despite some pressure to develop one. In the CRN story, Sandeep Johri, HP's vice president of strategy and corporate development, said, "We see this as an addition to our testing and applications portfolio. So we are not setting out to become a security vendor, from a firewall or perimeter security point of view." With rival IBM Corp. making its own security buys, it could be that HP is feeling insecure about its security offerings. —Stacey Higginbotham
