According to the latest McKinsey quarterly report, chief information officers want integrated telecommunications and information technology services. And who could blame them? With Internet protocol making both possible with one type of connection, it seems logical that IT services and telecommunications carriers will gradually converge. British Telecommunications plc is going in that direction as illustrated by the latest issue of Tech Confidential in an article about grid computing.
Other carriers such as the new AT&T Corp. and Verizon Communications Inc. are also looking at offering IT services over their networks as written about a couple of months ago in Tech Confidential. However, where are the IT integrators? What is IBM Corp. or Accenture doing on the telecom side? Will those who have built and control their own IP network be the eventual winners as CIOs and companies demand integrated services? Or will the carriers get bought up by the integrators? I'm curious what the answers will be and who else might be thinking about it. — Stacey Higginbotham
