CBS kills CNET's Juke music operations, lays off staff

cnet.gifCBS Inc. and CNET have apparently killed Juke, an editorially driven music site, before its anticipated launch, and dismissed at least five employees, including four music journalists, in the process.

According to this blog post, former Village Voice blogger Tom Breihan and cohorts Ryan Dombal and Andy Greenwald are among the five. Breihan suggests that CBS Interactive is devoting more resources to its Last.fm Ltd. unit, the streaming audio and social music site for which it paid $280 million in May 2007. CBS acquired CNET for $1.8 billion in May 2008; it's not clear whether the Juke crew overlapped with Last.fm's editorial division, making them casualties of the integration, or whether the project was simply deemed an unnecessary expense in the context of larger economic uncertainty.

We're awaiting confirmation and further details from CBS Interactive, although Breihan's post doesn't leave much ambiguity as to what's already happened.

UPDATE
, 5:01 pm EST: A person familiar with the situation confirms that the Juke site was deemed a redundancy in the integration process. The project hadn't been fleshed out yet, but clearly was to include an editorial component; at least four of the five staffers laid off were music journalists in one form or another. Last.fm will be the focus of CBS's digital music efforts in the future, the person said. -- Paul Bonanos
