Tapulous' music game: 250,000 downloads in less than four days

tapulous.jpg"Tap Tap Revenge," a music game for Apple Inc.'s iPhone that borrows from "Guitar Hero," "Rock Band" and "Dance Dance Revolution," has caught on with 250,000 early-adopting music fans with a bit of idle time to kill. The game, developed by Silicon Valley-based Tapulous Inc., quickly reached No. 1 in popularity in the AppStore game category, and is now in the top 10 among applications in all categories. As of this morning, a quarter of a million people are Tap Tapping "without any promotion by Apple," says CEO Bart Decrem.

"Tap Tap Revenge" is a descendant of an older game, "Tap Tap Revolution," developed by programmer Nate True. Tapulous acquired the game and first introduced it on hacked or "jailbroken" iPhones. As in "Guitar Hero" and "Rock Band," players tap along to the rhythm of a song as it streams, hitting moving dots that correspond with musical notes or beats. At higher levels, the game includes a rhythmic side-to-side shake of the entire phone as well. The company introduced itself a week ago and made "Tap Tap Revenge" available for free download through the AppStore on Friday evening (following a problematic launch that delayed its availability for more than a full day). Investor Jeff Clavier of SoftTechVC last night described the push to launch on time as "epic."

Decrem, the former CEO of Web browser developer Flock Inc. and entrepreneur-in-residence at DCM, said Tapulous benefits from a well-connected investor group including Clavier, Khosla Ventures, X-G Group, Andy Bechtolsheim, Marc Benioff, Katrina Garnett, Alex Lloyd, Jeff Markowitz, Rajeev Motwani, Dan Rosensweig, Aydin Senkut, Ben Smith, Tim Stevens and Rob Theis, among a total of 30 angels. (Decrem himself is an investor as well.) They've provided about $1.8 million, which Decrem says will last about a year. The company employs eight people, including Decrem and two more co-founders. DCM is not an investor, Decrem says.

Although "Tap Tap Revenge" can be installed for free, Decrem says users will soon be able to add songs of their choosing for a fee. A premium edition and sponsored versions could follow, and Tapulous has already received inbound interest from independent musicians who want their songs in the game.

"We see it as a potential distribution channel," Decrem says.

Tapulous is "100% behind the iPhone" and aims to be a next-generation mobile company, so users of older and less hip phones shouldn't hold their collective breath waiting for "Tap Tap Revenge." But iPhone users can look forward to more Tapulous products, including a proximity-based "handshake" product that allows two iPhone users to exchange business card information and a location-based service that enhances Twitter. - Paul Bonanos

From: Birdie,

Of course everyone loves this game...it's catchy. People love to dance and sing. I wonder how interactive it really is though, it seems like all users will be doing is touching moving dots on a screen.

From: TK,

Tapulous is one of the hottest companies in the valley. All of their Apps were huge hits on the iPhone/Pod jailbreak world. They're all clean fun applications that people of all ages loved. An all star development team and backed by some of the smartest people in the valley. Bechtolsheim, Theis, Motwani, Clavier have amazing noses for building great companies.

From: Oshi,

Tapulous has major mojo. There are alot of good products on the App Store, but TTR is easy, fun and my entire family and friends love it. I can't wait to use the other Apps from Tapulous. Lots of really cool people involved and would love to find a way to invest if I could. Its refreshing to have a company build fun apps for the good of society and the community.

From: B. Adam,

TTR rocks. Its one of the coolest App on iTunes. I was at the Apple store today and every one in line waiting to buy iPhones and the store helpers said to download TTR. Wow...haven't seen so much excitement over a game in a long time. Then, tonite at the Wine Bars, people were playing TTR games all over the place and having a blast. I just cant wait till we can get more songs on it. Go Tapulous team. We LOVE IT!
