New (and free!) VC database is useful research tool

winn.jpgSearching for information on venture capital firms and their professionals? Give this new database, designed by Chrysalis Ventures associate Matt Winn (right), a spin. He says the service, simply called Venture Capital Database, or VCDB, can be useful, among other things, for entrepreneurs looking for funding, VCs seeking info on an entrepreneur's prior startups, limited partners researching potential investments, and aspiring VCs hunting for jobs.

"It's my hope that VCDB plays a role in developing an "entrepreneur friendly" ecosystem," Winn says in his post. "Increasingly, I suspect investors with access to the best young companies will be those that are perceived as being value-additive partners; this tool is my effort at starting that process early.

The database, which lists information on 492 VC firms and nearly 6,800 venture investors worldwide, is based on information from the National Venture Capital Association, supplemented by Winn's own entries. It provides links to firms' Web sites, email addresses, locations and investment parameters, including assets under management and minimum and maximum investment. In a nice touch, VCDB displays firms in Google Maps, which gives entrepreneurs an idea of their proximity to investors. Even more useful, it provides biographical info on individual VCs, along with links to their blogs, if they have one. The database is searchable by firm and VC, location, investment size and alma mater. -- Alain Sherter
