The case for filtered technology news

  Share     E-Mail    Discussion    Print Story
The San Jose Mercury News' technology blog, Silicon Beat, recently began experimenting with a new feature that allows companies to submit their press releases directly to the blog. They appear on the right hand side of the site. Not all submissions are accepted, but, by glancing at the site now, the bar must be set pretty low. As you can see from the screenshot below, there are three submitted press releases from:

1) Auctoogle - What a lame name. Azoogle is taken, so how about....
2) Flixsy - A nicely designed, although undistinguished, online video sharing site.
3) Gorage - I'm not trying to be harsh but I honestly can't figure out if this is a joke or not. (The two phony comments after the release don't help matters.)

Technology and venture capital news almost exclusively focuses on the actions of publicly traded and venture-funded startups. So, most people forget that for every startup funded, there are hundreds that aren't. And whether those ignored startups are a full-fledged company or a guy with a web site, they account for the largest percentage of startup activity. Despite that, they end up having the smallest impact. And they certainly received the least amount of attention (except on SiliconBeat's unfiltered news tracker).
