Benchmark Capital has invested $3.5 million in Engine Yard Inc., which makes a development and support platform for "Ruby on Rails," an open-source programming framework for Web applications. It is the startup's first round of institutional funding.

"Ruby on Rails has attracted growing legions of Web developers with its emphasis on elegance, ease of use and rapid time to market," said Benchmark general partner Mitch Lasky in a statement. "As the Rails community matures and makes greater inroads into the enterprise, Engine Yard's scalable, robust deployment solutions are increasingly necessary to achieve industry-leading application performance."

Lasky and Benchmark general partner Peter Fenton will join Engine Yard's board of directors. - Alain Sherter
