San Jose, Calif.-based Internet traffic management appliance maker A10 Networks stuck largely with a core of strategic inside investors in landing a $23 million final private investment in a deal led by Japan's Mitsui & Co. Ltd. and including Triton Ventures of Taiwan, H&Q/Asian Pacific of Palo Alto, Calif., Taiwan's Harbinger Venture Management.\ and Singapore-based Enspire Capital as returning investors, along with Taiwan-based new investor China Investment & Development Corp. A10 founder Lee Chen said the company chose not to seek to recruit new investors, noting that insiders put a healthy post-money valuation of nearly $95 million on the company. He expects the company to reach profitability in early 2009. The deal will support continued growth of sales of load-balancing and applications delivery optimization appliances to telecommunication carriers and service providers.

Engine Yard
Ruby and Rails startup Engine Yard of San Francisco has secured a $15 million Series B financing. The round was led by New Enterprise Associates Inc. of Menlo Park, Calif., with participation from Seattle's Amazon.com and current investor Benchmark Capital of Menlo Park. Peter Sonsini, a partner at NEA, has also joined Engine Yard's board of directors. It will use the capital to accelerate the growth of its business, for R&D of its forthcoming cloud computing cluster platform, and for product development of Ruby open-source projects, Rubinius and Merb. Founded in 2006, Engine Yard provides a platform and support for deploying Ruby and Rails applications for cloud computing.

Nanotech

Sand 9
Boston-based nano-mechanical technology startup Sand 9 Inc. has completed an $8 million Series A round led by new investor Flybridge Capital Partners of Boston. The company is developing advanced nano-mechanical resonator technology for the wireless device market and plans to use the proceeds for product development and expansion of its engineering team. David Aronoff, a general partner with Flybridge will join the company's board. General Catalyst Partners of Cambridge, Mass., led a $2 million seed funding for Sand 9 in May 2007 along with Menlo Park, Calif.'s Khosla Ventures. Both returned for the current round.  Founded in 2006, the company designs components to improve the performance and increase the capabilities of electronic devices.

Gaia Online
San Jose, Calif.-based Gaia Interactive Inc., an online social network targeting teenagers, has announced an $11 million Series C round from Institutional Venture Partners of Menlo Park, Calif. Started in 2003, Gaia Online is an immersive online community for teens and young adults where users socialize through customizable avatars, homes and cars. The company will use the proceeds for expansion and to add new features and functionality. Gaia received an undisclosed amout of Series B funding in January 2008 from New York's Time Warner Inc. The Gaia online community has nearly 3 million unique users per month. In December 2007, Gaia announced a partnership with Warner Bros. to make both free and pay-per-view versions of the studio's films available in Gaia's virtual cinemas.
 
Software

OpenSpan
Alpharetta, Ga.-based desktop productivity software company OpenSpan Inc. has closed a $13 million Series C round. The financing was led by co-led by FTVentures of San Francisco and Globespan Capital Partners of Boston, with re-investments from Atlanta-based Imlay Investments, as well as Sigma Partners and Matrix Partners, both of Boston. The funding allows OpenSpan to make new hires, and expand operations internationally. The company's lead product, Composite Studio, is surface integration software that allows IT to integrate and automate applications at the desktop level.

Medical devices

Tyrell
Houston medical device company Tyrell Inc. has raised $28 million in equity financing. The round was led by Santé Ventures of Austin, Texas, and Catterton Partners of Greenwich, Conn., joined by existing investor Austin Ventures of Austin. Kevin Lalande, managing partner for Santé Ventures and Michael Farello, partner at Catterton, will join the company's board. The company has developed a hand-held device, called Zeno, that is used in the treatment of acne. Tyrell will use the funds to expand distribution of the Zeno line, as well as to support new product introductions.
