microstaqVavle.gifWhen one thinks of micro-electro mechanical systems, or MEMS, often the first thing to spring to mind are tiny components used in optical componentry and the like. But this realm of high-technology has also sashayed its way into the cleantech arena, as evidenced by the announcement that Microstaq Inc., a maker of MEMS-based flow-control valves, has raised a $12.5 million Series B round.

Microstaq's tiny silicon-based valves tightly control fluids in heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, making them up to 20% more efficient, the company claims. It can also be used in refrigeration and automotive applications.

The funding was led by Good Energies, with participation from previous investors Yaletown Ventures Partners and Polygon Group. The startup raised a Series A round in 2006, and has received several grants from the New York State Energy Development and Research Authority.

Earlier this month, Good Energies participated in a $140 million Series B for solar power plant company SolarReserve Inc. Microstaq said the latest funding would be used to expand sales and distribution of its valve products. - Olaf de Senerpont Domis
