Tesla's long and bumpy road

  Share     E-Mail    Discussion    Print Story

Tesla.jpgInteresting profile of Tesla Motors Inc. in the latest issue of Stanford Magazine. It's a neat look at the Stanford University-bred technology that went into building the electric roadster, but it doesn't shy away from exploring the enormous competitive challenges facing Tesla.

What it doesn't do, possibly because of the lead times involved with publishing a bimonthly magazine, is delve into Tesla's recent stumbles. Originally expected to be delivered early last year, the first production roadsters haven't even been built yet, due in part to problems with transmission suppliers. The company also recently fired its CEO and founder Martin Eberhard, who responded with less-than-pleasant sentiments, and it let several other executives go.

These may just be bumps in the road in developing a breakthrough auto technology, or they may augur one of the more spectacular flameouts in recent startup history. - Olaf de Senerpont Domis
