Social networking startup The Point has raised $4.8 million from New Enterprise Associates to help activists take it to the streets.
The Chicago-based company is a group action network that provides its users with a way to organize fund-raisers, rallies, and boycotts -- basically any type of event or activity that needs a group of participants to succeed. Unlike startups like Meetup.com that help people with similar interests gather in the real world, The Point is focused on mobilizing individuals and groups for social causes, with the twist of waiting until enough people sign up for an event or protest so that a pre-set "tipping point" of attendees is reached.
This helps to guarantee safety in numbers, before an action or event takes place. And in true startup fashion, company founder Andrew Mason has a blog post with a picture of the napkin upon which he first sketched out the idea for the company, which launched in September. - George White
