What do Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems and Google have in common? They all began life as research projects by students at Stanford University.
From NYU and Columbia to MIT and the University of Michigan, schools all over the country are spawning startups. And venture capitalists, major corporations and city governments are increasingly involved in creating an infrastructure to foster entrepreneurs and nurture technology transfer. With a panel of high-profile experts representing academia, investors, entrepreneurs and executives, this webcast will explore the challenges inherent in taking great ideas out of the lab and into the marketplace.

Kathleen Flynn anchors The

its sister networks, NBC and CNBC.

Jeff Jensen has more than 20 years
experience in the bioscience and industrial sectors. He most recently
served as president and CEO of Eksigent Technologies, a leading
developer of microfluidic platforms for bioanalytical and medical device
applications. He was responsible for signing major partnerships and
distribution deals with companies such as Applied Biosystems and Johnson
& Johnson. Prior to Eksigent, Jensen was COO of Mobius Technologies
and held management positions at Raychem and Pall Corp. He received his
bachelor of science from Cornell University in chemical engineering and
completed the program for management development at Harvard Business
School.
John Steuart

John Steuart has spent the last 20 years
managing, building and investing in technology and life sciences
companies. He focuses on the intersection of the information technology
and life sciences markets including bioinformatics, molecular
diagnostics, genomics, proteomics, software and instrumentation for
med-tech industries.
Steuart serves on the board of directors of
Arcxis Biotechnologies Inc., Tibion, Fluxion Biosciences Inc., Gene
Security Network and WiredBenefits Inc. He is an industry fellow at the
Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology at the College of Engineering
as well as a member of the advisory council to the Lester Center's
Berkeley Entrepreneurs' Forum at University of California, Berkeley.
Early
in his career, he joined Alafi Capital LLC, an Emeryville, Calif.-based
venture firm specializing in early-stage biomedical companies, where he
served as an officer of the general partner.
Maria Gotsch
President and CEO

York City Investment Fund
Maria Gotsch is the president and
CEO of the New York City Investment Fund. Prior to joining the fund in
1999, she was a managing director at BT Wolfensohn (now part of Deutsche
Bank AG), providing strategic and financial advice related to mergers,
acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures and the development of
business strategies. Before starting with Wolfensohn, Gotsch worked at
LaSalle Partners in the New York area and for Merrill Lynch Capital
Markets in New York and London. She has an M.B.A. from Harvard Business
School and a B.A. from Wellesley College.
David Brophy
Director of the Office for the Study of Private Equity Finance/ Associate Professor of Finance
The University of Michigan School of Business Administration
As a member of the Finance Faculty at The University of Michigan School of Business Administration from 1968 to the present, and Director of its Center for Venture Capital and Private Equity Finance since 1992, David Brophy assists emerging and mid-sized companies. Dr. Brophy is a founding member of the editorial board of the Journal of Private Equity and the International Journal of Venture Capital. His advisory and consultant activities in the public and private sector include such funds as Compass Technology Partners, Plymouth Ventures, and Bio-Star Ventures and various government agencies in the United States, Australia and France.
Dr. Brophy received a Bachelor of Arts from St. Francis Xavier University, an M.B.A from the University of Detroit and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University.
