Movers & shakers: Oct. 22, 2008

CreightonCondonBig.pngShearman & Sterling LLP announced that Creighton Condon, a New York mergers and acquisitions partner, will transfer to London to become the firm's European managing partner.

Condon (pictured) will remain a member of the four-partner global strategy group and the policy committee, the firm's governing body.


Barclays Bank plc's investment banking unit, Barclays Capital, hired 100 professionals, mostly from Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., to launch an equity business in Japan.

Kazutoshi Ohkubo joins from Lehman as a managing director and head of equity sales in Japan. Managing director Koichiro Chiwata becomes head of equity research in Japan. Before Lehman, he spent 16 years at Nikko Citigroup Ltd. Some of the top analysts include Hidenao Miyajima, chief strategist; Fumiyuki Takahashi, quantitative strategy; Mikiya Yamada, chemicals; Masanori Maruo, utilities; Toshihide Yoda, pharmaceuticals; Junsuke Senoguchi, banking; Keiichi Yoneshima, Internet; and Mia Nagasaka, entertainment.

On Oct. 14, Nomura Holdings Inc. closed its $525 million acquisition of most parts of Lehman Brothers' Asia Pacific franchise including Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, India, Thailand, and Japan. In September, Barclays took on about 10,000 North American Lehman bankers.

Jefferies & Co. is expanding its fixed-income unit. The senior managing directors hired are: Perrin Arturi, head of agency pass through trading; Thomas Dolan, head of whole loan trading and sales, both commercial and residential; and Chander Gupta, head of European asset-backed and mortgage-backed securities trading.

Arturi was a senior managing director in the mortgage division of Bear Stearns Cos., where he worked for 20 years. Dolan was most recently a managing director at ABN Amro NV in the mortgage capital markets group. Before that, he was head of origination sales at Morgan Stanley and worked at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. Before Jefferies, Gupta was a managing director at Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc, in charge of European ABS trading.


Clayton Holdings Inc., a provider of asset management to the mortgage investment industry, made Paul Bossidy its CEO. Bossidy was a senior operating executive at Cerberus Capital Management LP. Before that, he worked at Prudential Investment Corp. and Coopers & Lybrand LLP. Earlier, Bossidy worked at General Electric Co., where he was president and chief executive at several GE divisions.

Bossidy replaces Frank Filipps who left the company in July to pursue other interests.


Citadel Investment Group LLC hired Rohit D'Souza to lead its capital markets business, which will serve and partner with firms including asset managers, banks, hedge funds and technology providers. D'Souza joins from Merrill Lynch & Co., where he was global head of equities and alternative investments. Previously, he was head of North American equity trading at Morgan Stanley.

The capital markets platform also includes Citadel Solutions, a hedge fund administration business.


Independent broker-dealer Louis Capital Markets LP appointed Edward Morse as a managing director, head of economic research. Morse worked at Lehman Brothers Inc., where he was a managing director and head of commodities research from 2006. Before Lehman, Morse spent seven years at Hess Energy Trading Co. LLC.


Putnam Investments brought in two equity fund managers. Nick Thakore and Robert Ewing will join as managing directors of the large cap equities team on Nov. 3. Also, Thakore becomes portfolio manager for the Putnam voyager fund, while Ewing becomes portfolio manager for the Putnam fund for growth and income. Both join Putnam from RiverSource Investments, formerly American Express Funds.

Eric Harthun, who was portfolio leader for the growth and income fund, will return to managing the small cap value fund, led by Edward Shadek. Putnam's global asset allocation team, led by Jeff Knight, which managed the voyager fund, will handle Putnam's asset allocation funds.

Earlier this month, Putnam hired Jeffrey Carney to head its global marketing and product development. Most recently, he was president of Bank of America Corp.'s retirement and global wealth and investment client solutions group.


DLA Piper opened an office in Doha covering projects, project finance, construction, corporate and real estate. Jeffrey Bailey is head of the Qatar office.

Earlier this month, the firm created a joint venture with the international division of Al Wagayan, Al Awadhi & Al Saif, a Kuwait law firm that covers corporate, commercial, banking and finance, Islamic finance and projects. The joint venture will operate as DLA Piper Kuwait.


Dimitri Nionakis rejoined Howrey LLP as a partner in the securities litigation, government enforcement and white collar defense practice and antitrust practice groups in Washington. Most recently, Nionakis practiced at DLA Piper.
