Movers & shakers: Nov. 26, 2008

PaulAllenMajorLindsay.pngPaul Allen joined search firm Major, Lindsey & Africa LLC as a managing director in San Francisco, focusing on partner placement. He was a partner with Bingham McCutchen LLP's securities practice in San Francisco. Earlier, Allen (pictured) was executive director and division risk manager for Morgan Stanley's global wealth management group. He was also executive director of Morgan Stanley's law and compliance division. Allen began his legal career as a securities, employment and commercial litigation associate at Thelen Reid & Priest LLP.

Also, Keeley Mitchell-Wallace joined the firm as a managing director in its associate practice group. Before working for SouthSearch Legal Recruiters in the Southeast, Mitchell-Wallace practiced commercial real estate law at Seward & Kissel LLP in New York, K&L Gates LLP in Miami and Wolf, Block, Schorr & Solis-Cohen LLP in Philadelphia.

UBS has made several Asian hires.

It appointed Susumu Okamura as president and representative director of UBS Global Asset Management (Japan) Ltd. Okamura, most recently head of the institutional marketing and products, replaces Christof Kutscher, a member of UBS' group managing board and head of UBS Global Asset Management for Asia Pacific. Before joining UBS in 2005, Okamura spent 20 years at Dai-ichi Mutual Life Insurance Co.

Recently, UBS Wealth Management tapped Adeline Chien as a managing director in Hong Kong. Chien, who was at UBS between 1995 and 2004, joins from Goldman, Sachs & Co., where she was executive director for private wealth management.

JP Upadhyaya and Agnes Kuan join as executive directors in Hong Kong. Upadhyaya joins from HSBC Private Bank, where he was a senior director and team head covering the Indian diaspora in the region. For the past 12 years, Kuan worked for Merrill Lynch Global Wealth Management.

In Singapore, Irene Tan joined as a managing director, while Jonathan Ng and Ong Lay Khiam arrived as executive directors. Tan and Ng worked at HSBC Private Bank. A veteran corporate banker, Khiam has worked in the banking and finance industry in Singapore since 1971.


James Zelter, president and chief operating officer of Apollo Investment Corp., was named CEO and a director of the board. He replaces John Hannan, who will retain his chairmanship.

Executive vice president Patrick Dalton will replace Zelter as president and COO.


Amherst Securities Group LP, a broker-dealer specializing in residential mortgage-backed securities, hired Timothy Dooley as head of non-agency RMBS trading. Dooley previously worked at Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. as a senior vice president of mortgage trading. He spent 11 years with Lehman.


Fidelity Investments named Charles Goldman, former executive vice president and head of Schwab Institutional, as president of institutional platforms for Fidelity Institutional Products Group. Goldman will arrive in early 2009 and report to Michael Clark, president of Fidelity Institutional Products Group.

Fidelity recently hired Michael Durbin as president of Fidelity Institutional Wealth Services. Durbin will also join in early 2009 after 18 years with Morgan Stanley, most recently as chief operating officer of the national sales division of its global wealth management group.

Durbin succeeds John Callahan, who took a senior position with Fidelity Personal and Workplace Investing.


Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP said Luca Fabbrini, Guido Testa, Francesco Seassaro, Giovanni Carcaterra and Paolo Carrière will join the law firm as partners in its corporate practice in Milan, effective Jan. 1. The group, now partners at Vita Samory, Fabbrini e Associati, will work under Alessandro De Nicola, managing partner of Orrick's Italian offices, and Luigi Colombo, partner-in-charge of the Milan office. Fabbrini and Seassaro cover mergers and acquisitions, private equity and acquisition finance. Testa handles M&A and corporate law matters. Carcaterra advises on acquisitions, private equity, joint ventures, corporate law and contracts. Carrière specializes in banking and finance law, regulatory and financial services, equity capital markets and PE transactions.


Nixon Peabody LLP hired Samuel Feigin and Mark Kass as partners in Washington. They join the corporate transactions and labor and employment practices from Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo PC, where they led that firm's Israeli business practice.


In Chicago, Clifford Meacham joined Jams, a private provider of alternative dispute resolution services. Meacham will serve as a mediator and arbitrator of disputes, focusing on real estate and construction matters. Meacham served as an associate judge in Chicago's Cook County from 1989 to 2008. He was previously assistant U.S. trustee for the Department of Justice.


Bankruptcy lawyer Jamie Edmonson joined Wilmington, Del.-based Bayard PA as senior counsel. Previously, Edmonson was a managing director with XRoads Solutions Group LLC. Earlier, she practiced at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP.
