Movers & shakers: Dec. 16, 2008

KatzRobertSM.pngShearman and Sterling LLP has promoted 11 attorneys to partner. These include: Robert Katz (pictured) (M&A), Kirsten Nelson Cunha (securities litigation) and Samuel Waxman (intellectual property) in New York; Clare Breeze (property) and Mei Li Lian (capital markets, structured finance) in London; Katja Kaulamo (capital markets) in Frankfurt; Winfried M. Carli (bank finance and restructuring) and Andreas Merkner (M&A) in Munich; Tobia Croff (M&A, capital markets) in Rome; Ling Huang (M&A) in Beijing; and Sanja L. Udovicic (project development and finance) in Singapore.

Piper Jaffray & Co. has added Victor Caruso as a managing director in New York. Caruso, who joins the middle-market investment bank's financial restructuring group, was a managing director with Morgan Joseph & Co., where he developed the firm's restructuring practice. Earlier, he was a partner with Gordian Group LLC, and before that, a Bear Stearns Cos. managing director and founding member of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.'s restructuring group.

SunTrust Banks Inc. announced a series of management changes. William Rogers Jr. will become president of SunTrust Banks, a role held by SunTrust chairman and CEO James Wells III. Rogers serves as corporate executive vice president, overseeing the Atlanta-based bank's wholesale, mortgage, and wealth and investment management units. CFO Mark Chancy will assume more responsibility for the bank's corporate and investment banking unit, as well as its chief administrative office, which David Dierker continues to head. Vice chairman William Reed Jr. will oversee new responsibilities related to the transition. All will continue to report to Wells.


Brokerage firm MF Global Ltd. named Karel Harbour chief operating officer. Based in London, he was COO for the company's European entities. Harbour joined MF Global in 2002, upon its acquisition of GNI Ltd. He reports directly to MF Global CEO Bernard Dan.


Broker-dealer BTIG LLC has opened a London office for its new BTIG Ltd. affiliate, which has become a member of the London Stock Exchange. Gary Hayes is CEO of the affiliate, having served as COO for Collins Stewart plc, and before that, as a managing director with Merrill Lynch & Co. and Smith NewCourt plc. Eight others will join the London office.


Daniel McFadden was promoted to senior managing director of client services with Berwyn, Pa.-based Turner Investment Partners. Previously, he was a managing director of client services. McFadden reports to Robert Turner, the investment manager's chairman and chief investment officer.


Energy-focused private equity firm Natural Gas Partners has promoted David Hayes and Colin Raymond from principals to managing directors. Hayes, who joined in 1998, had worked in Merrill Lynch & Co.'s energy investment banking group in Houston. Raymond joined the firm in 2005. Earlier, he was a vice president of Hunt Oil Co.


San Francisco's TSG Consumer Partners LLC added John Kenney as a managing director and partner. He joins the consumer products-focused private equity firm from AEA Investors LLC, where he was co-head of its consumer product and retail investments practice.


Hilco Real Estate LLC named Neil Aaronson as CEO. He was an executive vice president of Hilco Trading LLC, the parent company. Aaronson succeeds Mitchell Kahn, who is pursuing other opportunities. The Northbrook, Ill., real estate adviser also promoted Gregory Apter from chief operating officer to president.


New York restructuring firm Alvarez & Marsal added Michael Salve as a managing director in its dispute analysis and forensic services group. Previously, Salve was a principal with Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP's forensic and dispute services group, where he led the firm's economic consulting services group. Earlier, he worked for KPMG LLC.


Turnaround adviser MorrisAnderson & Associates Ltd. promoted Kenneth Yager from managing director to principal and equity owner, effective Jan. 1. Yager joined the Chicago company in 2005, having previously worked for midmarket turnaround firm Newpoint Ventures.


Akerman Senterfitt has added Justin Balser as a shareholder in its consumer finance litigation practice. Balser joins the firm's new Denver office from a Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. subsidiary, where he was in-house counsel and oversaw consumer finance cases.


Jim Finnamore will join insurance and risk management firm Aon Corp. in January as regional director of its environmental services group in the Asia-Pacific region, based in Singapore. He was a senior vice president for Marsh Inc.


New York's ACA Financial Guaranty Corp. added Steven Berkowitz as general counsel. He spent 16 years with Financial Security Assurance Inc., where he was most recently a managing director in the asset finance group.
