Movers & shakers: Jan. 26, 2009

JohnMooreJr.png3i Group plc hired John Moore Jr. as a partner, responsible for the firm's healthcare investment strategy across North America.

Moore was a managing director and global head of healthcare investment banking at Morgan Stanley, where he spent 15 years. He has also covered the consumer, retail and general industrial sectors.


In London, Standard Chartered plc named James Courtenay global head of project and export finance in its corporate finance group. He was global head of leveraged and real estate finance with ABN Amro NV. Courtenay replaced Anil Dua, who became head of origination and client coverage for Africa.

Separately, the firm recently announced that nonexecutive chairman Mervyn Davies left the board to become minister for trade promotion and investment in the U.K. government. Davies, who helped design the U.K. government bailout plan, joined Standard Chartered in 1993 and has been on the board since 1997. He was CEO from November 2001 until November 2006, when he became nonexecutive chairman.

Deputy chairman and senior independent director John Peace was named acting nonexecutive chair while the board looks for a permanent replacement. Rudy Markham was named acting senior independent director.


Chicago middle-market private equity fund Wynnchurch Capital is opening an office in Toronto, to be led by managing director Morty White.

Before directing his own consulting practice, White worked at GE Capital Corp. for seven years, most recently as vice president, originating debt and equity investments.


U.K. midmarket private equity firm Phoenix Equity Partners promoted Tim Ashlin and Sam Antrobus to principals. Ashlin joined in 2004 and has worked for Close Brothers Corporate Finance and PricewaterhouseCoopers. He now focuses on the healthcare and education sectors. Antrobus joined Phoenix in 2006 after two years in the private equity group at Merrill Lynch & Co. Before that, he worked at Rothschild, advising on PE transactions as a member of the financial sponsors team.


Gary Loveridge, a 35-year veteran healthcare attorney, rejoined McDonough Holland & Allen PC after serving as senior vice president and general counsel for Sutter Health in Sacramento, Calif. Formerly McDonough's managing shareholder and healthcare practice group leader, Loveridge returns as of counsel. He first joined the firm as a litigator in 1972.


Healthcare and technology-focused private equity firm Riverside Partners promoted Philip Borden to general partner. Before Riverside, he was an investment professional at Oxford Bioscience Partners and Frazier Healthcare Ventures.


Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP recruited D. Louis Glaser as a partner in its healthcare practice in Chicago. Glaser comes to Katten from Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP, where he was a partner.


Daniel Edelman joined Crowell & Moring LLP's New York office as a partner in the commercial litigation group. Edelman comes in from Heller Ehrman LLP, where he was a shareholder.


Wildman, Harrold, Allen & Dixon LLP said John Babala, Gregory Rovenger and Edward Schultz joined its business transactions department as partners in Los Angeles. All three were partners with Dreier Stein Kahan Browne Woods George LLP.


Partner James Bremen, along with associates Mark Veitch, Diana Fatkullina and Tom Trevorrow, joined King & Spalding LLP's global transactions group in London. They arrive from Maxwell Winward LLP. Bremen previously practiced at White & Case LLP.


Terrence Davis joined Schiff Hardin LLP as counsel in the futures and securities regulation group from Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP in Washington, where he was a senior attorney.


Dykema Gossett PLLC added Fredrick Levin to its litigation department as a member, resident in the Los Angeles office. He handles complex commercial litigation, defending financial institutions against consumer and securities class action litigation. Levin was a partner at Mayer Brown LLP.


Seyfarth Shaw LLP expanded its business immigration practice, hiring eight lawyers and nine additional team members. Angelo Paparelli joins as a partner, along with attorneys Susan Wehrer, Debi Gloria, Kwang-Yi Ger Gale, Karen Gatbonton, Elise Tsai, Lily Hensel and Elizabeth Wheeler. All were with Paparelli & Partners LLP.


Keith Orso, a patent litigator in Irell & Manella LLP's Century City, Calif., office, was elected to the firm's partnership.


Jams, a provider of mediation and arbitration services, hired George Calkins for its construction practice. Previously, Calkins spent three decades as a partner in the Century City, Calif., office of Cox, Castle & Nicholson LLP.
