Movers & shakers: March 12, 2009

MarkEchlinMovers.pngIn June, Mark Echlin will join Credit Suisse Group's investment banking department as a managing director and head of industrials, EMEA. Based in London, he will report to Jim Amine, who is global co-head of investment banking alongside Marc Granetz. Echlin will oversee groups responsible for the seven sectors, including basic materials and infrastructure, for which he will report to the global head of that sector, Joe Reece.

Echlin (pictured) will arrive from Merrill Lynch & Co., where he was a managing director and head of industrials for EMEA. Before joining Merrill in 2007, he spent 16 years at Morgan Stanley, most recently as co-head of basic materials. Echlin began his corporate finance career at Morgan Grenfell in 1987.


Rob Rankin, UBS' Asia-Pacific investment banking head since 2003, has resigned. UBS will split his role between Matthew Hanning and David Chin. Hanning was head of mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance for Asia-Pacific, while Chin was Asia head of the financial institutions group. Additionally, Henry Cai was named chairman of Asia investment banking. Cai joined UBS in March 2006 as its China investment banking chairman and later became vice chairman of UBS Investment Banking, Asia.


Mark Aedy, head of corporate and investment banking in EMEA for the combined Bank of America Corp. and Merrill Lynch & Co., has reportedly left the firm to pursue "other career and personal opportunities." Earlier, Aedy ran Merrill's European industrial advisory group.


Luca Benzoni,former head of the Italian financial institutions group at Citigroup Inc., was promoted to co-head of FIG for EMEA. Mirko Briozzo and Federico Chiaverini will split Benzoni's old role. Benzoni will run the group with David Spinks.


Wealth management firm Rockefeller & Co. appointed Jon V.M. Pratt as managing director for institutional relationships, resident in New York. He reports to CEO James McDonald. Most recently, Pratt was a managing director and head of Asia-Pacific debt origination at Merrill Lynch & Co. Before that, he was a managing director and head of debt capital markets for Asia (excluding Japan) at Credit Suisse Group.

Last week, the firm hired Louise Sclafani as a senior investment adviser. Sclafani previously spent 15 years with J.P. Morgan Private Bank, advising high net-worth individuals, trusts and foundations.


London clearing house LCH.Clearnet Group Ltd. opened an office in New York to support clearing initiatives in the U.S., including the Nodal Exchange and credit default swaps. Ed Watts was hired as head of the office. Watts previously spent 33 years at Goldman, Sachs & Co., where he was a managing director in the operations division.


Hogan & Hartson LLP said former Senator John Warner will rejoin the firm as a partner in Washington on April 1. Warner served 30 years on the Senate Armed Services Committee, including three periods as chairman. He joined Hogan & Hartson as an associate in 1961 and became a partner in 1964. In February 1969, Warner left the firm and went to the Department of Defense, where he served for over five years as under secretary and secretary of the Navy.


Ronald Tenpas, most recently the Department of Justice's top environmental attorney, joined Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP's litigation practice in Washington. As assistant attorney general for the environment and natural resources division from 2007 to 2009, Tenpas oversaw 400 Justice Department attorneys.

Also in Washington, two attorneys from Reed Smith LLP joined the employee benefits and executive compensation practice at Morgan Lewis. Donald Myers, former counsel for Erisa regulation and interpretation at the Department of Labor, joined as a partner. He is accompanied by of counsel Michael Richman.

In Paris, the firm added venture capital attorney Olivier Edwards as a partner in its business and finance practice. He will also lead the emerging business and technology initiative in Europe. Joining Edwards from Jones Day, where he led the venture capital practice, will be of counsel Catherine Muyl and associate Geraldine Garcia.


Nixon Peabody LLP announced that Edward O'Callaghan joined the firm as a partner in the government investigations and white collar defense practice in New York. He spent nearly a decade as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.


Alvarez & Marsal said Art Barrios joined the firm as a senior director in its New York-based business consulting practice. Before this, Barrios was a managing director with the financial services advisory practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The firm also named five managing directors in New York: Bill Johnsen, Paul Rundell and Sam Mehta, healthcare; Mark Belanger, corporate finance; and Jacques Roizen, revenue enhancement.

In Dallas, A&M tapped restructuring professionals Jamie Pierson, George Christon and John Stuart as senior directors. Pierson was vice president of corporate development and integration with Greatwide Logistics Services Inc. Christon was CEO of Cole & Co. Earlier, he was a managing director with the corporate finance and restructuring practice of FTI Consulting Inc. Stuart was a founding member of the distressed private equity group at Highland Capital Management LP.

Alvarez & Marsal Transaction Advisory Group said former KPMG partner Ryan Farrell joined as a managing director to lead the group's efforts relating to private equity firms, hedge funds and corporate acquirers in Boston.
