Movers & shakers: March 30, 2009

AndreaPellegriniMovers.pngNomura Holdings Inc. hired Andrea Pellegrini as co-chairman for Italy and head of investment banking, partnering with Alessandro Cremona, chairman of investment banking for Italy. Pellegrini will be based in Rome and will also co-chair the country executive committee with Kazuhisa Kishimoto, president of Nomura Italy.

Pellegrini (pictured) hails from Bank of America Corp.'s Merrill Lynch unit, where he was chairman of the public sector group for Europe, the Middle East and Africa and head of investment banking for Italy. Prior to his 12 years at Merrill Lynch, Pellegrini spent five years with Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. in New York, London and Milan.


Thomas Davidson, a former banker in Bank of America Corp.'s Merrill Lynch unit, is leaving for Credit Suisse Group. In June, Davidson will co-head the healthcare group in the Americas alongside Stuart Smith. Davidson was head of BofA-Merrill's U.S. pharmaceuticals business, covering large cap, specialty and generic pharmaceuticals companies. Based in New York, he will report to Marc Granetz, co-head of global investment banking. Davidson, who worked at CS before joining Merrill 11 years ago, recently helped advise Pfizer Inc. on its $68 billion acquisition of Wyeth.

Separately, Credit Suisse appointed Rolf Bögli as head of private banking for Switzerland, effective April 1. He replaces Urs Dickenmann, who becomes head of the ultra high-net-worth individuals segment for private banking in Switzerland. Bögli was most recently with UBS as chief operating officer, wealth management adviser group for the U.S. Dickenmann, and has been with Credit Suisse since 1986.


In New York, BMO Capital Markets brought in Christopher Donohoe as a managing director in its financial institutions group. Donohoe had been a senior investment banker with Bank of America Corp. and with J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., where he advised specialty finance companies and banks on merger and acquisitions, and debt and equity assignments.


Billy Goldstein joined Macquarie Capital Advisors as a managing director in the telecommunications, media, entertainment and technology group, based in New York. He will lead Macquarie's activities in telecom and related sectors in North America. Goldstein previously worked at Goldman, Sachs & Co., where he was a managing director on the TMT team in the investment banking division.


Hermann Ferré joined Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP as a partner in New York. He will focus on commercial litigation matters, particularly disputes involving parties operating in Latin America and the energy sector. He was previously a partner at Thelen, Reid & Priest LLP.


Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP added two partners in the firm's Paris office: Luc Saucier, who practices mergers and acquisitions and securities law, and competition lawyer Marco Plankensteiner.


Offshore law firm Ogier promoted Michael Fay to managing partner of the British Virgin Islands. He focuses on litigation and corporate law for the BVI jurisdiction.


Reinhart Torre has set up an oil and gas practice in Algeria, through a partnership with Grand Auzas & Associes.


Offshore law firm Appleby made nine promotions and one new hire. The firm named four partners effective April 1: David Clark, corporate and commercial, and banking and asset finance in London; Alison Dyer-Fagundo, corporate finance and telecommunications, technology and intellectual property in Bermuda; Graeme Halkerston, litigation and insolvency in the Cayman Islands; and Simon Raftopoulos, banking and asset finance team, Cayman Islands.

Six counsel include: Alastair Drummond, property finance and banking; Myles Flint, funds and investment services; Alisdair Lynch, corporate and commercial, and banking and asset finance; Doug Molyneux, funds and investment services, corporate finance and the telecommunications and technolog; and Louise Richardson, litigation and insolvency. Jayson Wood, litigation and insolvency, was hired as counsel.


Cleveland law firm Ulmer & Berne LLP added Jeffrey Baddeley and Todd Atkinson to its corporate restructuring and creditors' rights group. Baddeley is a Case Western Reserve University School of Law adjunct professor and a past chair of the Cleveland Bar Association Bankruptcy and Commercial Law section. Before joining Ulmer, Atkinson worked for Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP.


Mark Denny has joined Kilpatrick Stockton LLP's Charlotte, N.C., office as a senior associate in finance and real estate. He was previously an associate with Alston & Bird LLP.


Howard Rice Nemerovski Canady Falk & Rabkin added securities litigator Tower Snow Jr. as a director. Tower was previously a partner with Clifford Chance US LLP and a member of the Americas management group. He has also been chairman of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison LLP and served as a partner with Shearman & Sterling and Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP.
