Pen & Inc.: Lloyd Blankfein

by Yvette Kantrow  |  Published May 4, 2012 at 1:08 PM

050712_PenInc.gifHere's a news flash: Goldman, Sachs & Co. is not really a vampire squid. "That's just hyperbole," Lloyd Blankfein explained during a softball interview with Bloomberg Television, part of a much-ballyhooed media blitz in April by the Goldman chairman and CEO, which also featured a friendly chat with the folks at CNBC. The appearances seemed to quell two years of speculation that the 57-year-old Blankfein was a goner as Goldman seeks to repair the damage done by the financial crisis, countless investigations, fines and lawsuits, and an op-ed in The New York Times accusing the firm of regularly duping its clients. Readers of the Goldman tea leaves reasoned that Blankfein wouldn't be so chatty if he was on his way out, but it could also be argued that the one-time trader turned to television to shore up his still-shaky position. After all, revenue is down, regulation is up, and muppets are everywhere. As they say on TV, stay tuned.
