Use interactive map above to browse regional reports from The Deal's City by City

A nation of localities
For six years now, The Deal magazine, in the person of editor at large Matt Miller, has been reporting and writing stories that take in-depth looks at various metropolitan areas, particularly from a dealmaking perspective. We hit Los Angeles and Chicago, Boston and Cleveland, Milwaukee, Toronto and Philadelphia.

Much of the reporting on these regions came down to a deep dive into the middle market – not just to the entrepreneurs and proprietors of businesses there, but to local advisers, legal and financial, to lenders and to investors, from private equity shops to local connoisseurs of distress.

We eventually realized that we were, city by city, producing a national mosaic, made up of many smaller, often highly colored, pieces. And we saw that we had the opportunity to begin to build a national directory of middle-market players. Thus was born The Deal's City by City, a combination of stories, videos and directories of midmarket banks, shops, firms and funds.

In time, each region will have its own minisite. Together, through the big map, we can begin to get a comprehensive sweep of just who does the great bulk of dealmaking. This is, of course, a work in progress, with many more cities to come. Today San Diego, tomorrow the world – or at least the United States. Come along on the journey. - Robert Teitelman, editor in chief
