Abu Dhabi Investment Authority hired Deutsche Bank AG's John McCarthy as global head of infrastructure, reporting to Majed Al Romaithi, executive director of the real estate and infrastructure department.
McCarthy was a managing director and global head of RREEF infrastructure at Deutsche Bank since 2005. Prior to that, he was global head of infrastructure capital and structured capital markets at ABN Amro Bank. McCarthy began his career in the infrastructure sector in 1990 at BZW in Australia, where he rose to head of infrastructure.
HSBC Holdings plc is still shrinking, announcing plans to cut costs by $2 billion to $3 billion by 2016, which could result in the loss of as many as 14,000 jobs. HSBC has been downsizing for two years. In its first phase, the bank said it closed or disposed of 52 nonstrategic or underperforming businesses and achieved $4 billion of annualized cost savings.
Advent International tapped Michael Ming-Yue Zhu as an operating partner and William Tsao as an industry adviser, chemicals.
Zhu became China country general manager of Solvay SA following its merger with Rhodia, where he worked since 1994. Before that, he was head of ICI's Shanghai representative office. In the 1980s, Zhu worked at the Economic Commission of the P.R.C. and the Chemical Industry Bureau of Wuxi, Jiangsu province.
Tsao was most recently head of DuPont Co.'s performance coating business in China. He spent more than 35 years at DuPont as a chemicals industry adviser.
Advent opened its Shanghai office in April.
PineBridge Investments named Wael Aburida as chief investment officer of PineBridge Investments Middle East to lead the private equity and real estate investments for the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey. Aburida was director of mergers and acquisitions at Waha Capital. He was previously director of the global M&A group at Intel Corp., based in its Santa Clara, Calif., headquarters. He was also managing director of Nollenberger Capital Partners and DCA Partners.
Based in Bahrain, Aburida will report to Talal Al Zain, chief executive of PBME.
Shearman & Sterling LLP added private equity partners Mark Soundy, Sarah Priestley and Simon Burrows in London. They hail from Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, where they worked with private equity partner Jeremy Dickens, who joined Shearman & Sterling's New York office in April.
Soundy helped establish Weil's Dubai office and expand its PE practice in London. Priestley was head of Weil's London corporate tax group, focusing on U.K., multijurisdictional and Pan-European mergers and acquisitions and private equity deals. Burrows counsels private equity and captive investors, hedge funds, public and private corporations and management teams on cross-border transactions in Europe, the Middle East and the U.S. He is also involved in restructuring, funds and equity capital markets.
Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP said Steven R. Arnold joined the firm as a partner in the financial services and banking practice. He joined from Toyota Financial Services, where he was managing counsel. Before that, Arnold was general counsel, compliance officer and BSA officer of Pacific Premier Bank and was corporate counsel for WFS Financial.
Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP added three partners to the firm's business trial practice and communications team: Gardner Gillespie, Dave Thomas and Paul Werner. They join the Washington office from Hogan Lovells.
David L. Burgert, a trial lawyer focused on patent disputes, joined the Houston office of Jones Day as a partner in the intellectual property practice. He was formerly a partner at Houston's Porter Hedges LLP.
Kaufman Dolowich Voluck LLP said Robert Berns joined the firm as a partner in Hackensack, N.J. Berns covers professional liability defense, ethics proceedings, insurance and commercial disputes and arrives from Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker.
Duane Morris LLP added two senior associates to its high-technology intellectual property team in Palo Alto., Calif., four months after it launched the office. David Xue and Phillip Mancini joined the firm from Goodwin Procter LLP and Crowell & Moring LLP, respectively. Earlier, Xue worked at Hangzhou-based online business-to-business e-commerce company Alibaba Inc., where he was the director of product development; and at Beijing-based fabless semiconductor company Vimicro International, where he was vice president. Mancini has been a systems engineer with Northrop Grumman Corp. and a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Wael Aburida was named chief investment officer of PineBridge Investments Middle East to lead the private equity and real estate investments for the MENA and Turkey.
