Paul Hawkinson retired from BMO Capital Markets this month, handing leadership of the firm's industrial group to Scott Humphrey, who also leads U.S. mergers and acquisitions. Hawkinson and Humphrey joined the firm in 2007. Hawkinson was previously with Banc of America Securities LLC, where he had been a managing director of the global industries group since 2005. Prior to that, he spent nine years at Deutsche Bank Securities. From 1997 to 2007, Humphrey worked at Deutsche Bank AG in Chicago and New York.
Separately, BMO hired James Paris and Joel Tiss. Paris is a managing director in the leveraged finance group, focusing on industrial clients. He joined from UBS , where he was a managing director and U.S. head of industrials leveraged finance coverage. Paris also worked at Barclays plc and Deutsche Bank Securities, where he spent 8 1/2 years. Tiss joined the equity research team, focusing on capital goods and machinery. Tiss was most recently with Buckingham Research Group and spent 23 years with Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., which he joined in 1985.
StepStone Group LLC added managing directors Mu-Shin Kim and Andy Tsai in Asia. Kim is responsible for investment and business development in Korea and Japan. Tsai will have similar responsibilities for Taiwan and broader Asia. Both work from Beijing.
Kim was head of private equity at Asian Development Bank. Earlier, he managed mergers and acquisitions at El Paso Corp. in Korea and Japan. Tsai was head of alternative investments at Cathay Life Insurance Co., where he managed a $2 billion global portfolio across private equity and hedge funds, and evaluated direct investment and venture capital funds in Taiwan.
Barclays plc named Christopher Van Houten as relationship director in its financial institutions team in New York, working with regional banks across the U.S. Van Houten hails from National Australia Bank, where he was a director in the financial institutions team managing relationships with major Canadian banks and regional and national U.S. banks. Prior to that, he worked on the financial institutions team at Bank of New York.
Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc made Bill Egan head of mandate sales for prime services, Asia Pacific, based in Singapore. Egan was most recently head of foreign exchange prime brokerage and OTC clearing in Singapore at Barclays plc, where he spent six years. Before that, he was with Goldman, Sachs & Co. and Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. in New York.
On Nov. 1, Susanne Zeidler will join the board of German private equity firm Deutsche Beteiligungs AG. Spokesman of the board of management Wilken von Hodenberg will step down in March, at which time Zeidler will become chief financial officer. Torsten Grede will become spokesman of the board.
Concept Capital Markets LLC hired Kyle Kupiec as a managing director in its prime brokerage services group. He spent the past 15 years with Shoreline Trading Group LLC. He will be joined by trader Richard de Ande and two others.
Knight Capital Group Inc. added Martin Brand, Matthew Nimetz and Fred Tomczyk to its board. Brand is a managing director at Blackstone Group LP, Nimetz is an advisory director and former managing director at General Atlantic, and Tomczyk is president and CEO of TD Ameritrade Holding Corp.
Cantor Fitzgerald Canada Corp. entered into agreements to hire the sales and trading, research and investment banking team of Versant Partners Inc., a Canadian institutionally-focused investment dealer, and to acquire certain other assets of the firm. The deal is subject to final closing conditions.
Mike Jams will lead Cantor's Canadian equity capital markets team, reporting to Laurence Rose, president and CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald Canada. Technology analyst Tom Liston will join Cantor as director of Canadian research.
John Harris joined the Los Angeles office of SNR Denton as a partner in the energy, environment and resources practice. Ernest Guadiana and Paul Williams joined as associates. All arrived from Meyers Nave Riback Silver & Wilson PC.
