On Oct. 1, Jasper Tans will join UBS as a managing director in equity capital markets, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, responsible for Scandinavia, Benelux and financial institutions. Tans was a partner managing director at Goldman, Sachs & Co., where he worked in the European financing group. Prior to that, he was head of the Japanese financing group.


Houston asset management firm Salient Partners LP recruited Ajay Mehra as a managing director and head of equities, based in New York. Mehra was most recently a managing director and head of manager and fund research at UBS. Previously, he was a portfolio manager and partner at Columbus Nova, where he co-managed a global opportunity/macro hedge fund and managed a global long-biased equity fund. Earlier, Mehra was head of equity research for State Street Research, where he was lead portfolio manager for several funds.


Energy investment and merchant bank Tudor, Pickering, Holt & Co. LLC named John Lowe, a retired ConocoPhillips Co. senior executive, as a senior executive adviser to the firm. He worked at ConocoPhillips and predecessor firms beginning in 1981. Lowe had been executive vice president of exploration and production and led the spinoff of Phillips 66.


Broker-dealer Gleacher & Co. Securities Inc. hired four managing directors in New York. Mark Ginsberg and Felix Partow work in the mortgage-backed securities and rates division, while William Gaberlavage and Jeffrey Warren are part of the credit products division.

Ginsberg was a managing director on the MBS trading desk at Sandler O'Neill & Partners LP. Partow was a managing director and partner at KGS Alpha Capital Markets LP, where he was also head of MBS derivatives trading. Gaberlavage joins from UBS, where he was a managing director and co-head of corporate desk analysts. Warren hails from Goldman, Sachs & Co., where he was a vice president in leveraged finance sales.


Robert Hagon became a managing director and co-head of equity sales trading at Sberbank CIB in London. He works alongside James Bevan. Hagon was head of the London-based emerging market sales trading team at Renaissance Capital. He also worked at UBS.


Palmer Square Capital Management, a part of Montage Investments, hired Emily Colella as a managing director, responsible for business development, focusing on institutions. She has held institutional client service and business development positions at SSI Investment Management, Artisan Partners and Wilshire Associates.

Palmer provides investment advisory services and manages portfolios of hedge fund strategies for high-net-worth, registered investment advisory firm, broker-dealer and institutional clients.


IBM Corp. will make Virginia Rometty chairwoman of the board on Oct. 1. She succeeds Samuel Palmisano, who will step down from the board. Rometty is currently president and CEO. She succeeded Palmisano as IBM's ninth CEO in January.

Rometty led the integration of PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting -- the largest acquisition in professional services history. Palmisano became CEO in 2002 and chairman in 2003.


Headland Capital Partners Ltd. appointed George Raffini as chairman and Marcus Thompson as CEO. They were joint managing partners of Headland. The firm also named Douglas Ng as senior partner, head of corporate development. He was senior partner, investor relations.

Headland was formerly HSBC Private Equity (Asia) Ltd.


Jones Day added Ian Blumenstein to its New York office as a partner in the capital markets practice. Blumenstein was a partner with Cooley LLP, where he was a member of the credit finance, public companies and public offering practices.


Linda Herman, formerly of Bryan Cave LLP, joined Haynes and Boone LLP's New York real estate practice. She previously practiced at Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP.


McDermott Will & Emery LLP said it received approval from South Korea's Ministry of Justice to open an office in Seoul. Partner In-Young Lee heads McDermott's Korea practice.


Paul Hastings LLP announced that Neil Hamilton is joining as a partner with the finance and investment management practices in London. Hamilton was previously a partner with Clifford Chance LLP. He focuses on securitizations and structured finance.
