From: Lawrence D. Loeb,

Amazing how Weil Gotshal, with Lehman, SemGroup, Bearing Point, GM, General Growth, Extended Stay, etc., didn't make the top 10 law firms.

Kind of makes it hard to take the tables seriously.

Perhaps you should consider asset values when preparing the tables.

From: Neil Malcolm,

This version of The Deal’s bankruptcy league tables includes only the top ten. Fuller league tables are included in the most recent issue of the magazine, The Deal, with complete rankings incuded on the league tables section of TheDeal Pipeline (pipeline.thedeal.com). In this set of league tables, we ranked law firms by number of deals, not volume. Weil Gotshal & Manges does tend to have fewer, if larger deals. The firm ranked 20th among law firms with 97 active bankruptcy cases, as of March 31, 2009.

The Deal’s bankruptcy league tables ranks legal, financial and other advisers on the number of active cases (firms) and assignments (professionals), globally. The advisers are given credit for debtor, creditor and other roles. The size of the debtor, nature of role an adviser plays, interested party represented, are not weighed in assigning credit.

The Deal also publishes an annual ranking of advisers on the largest U.S. bankruptcy cases filed within a calendar, and more frequently, cases filed in the U.S. over the previous six months to date. For example, in the ‘Banking on bankruptcies’ report http://www.thedeal.com/dealscape/2009/01/banking_on_bankruptcies.php), The Deal ranked the top (hottest) advisers on Chapter 7, 9, 11 or 15 bankruptcy petitions filed in 2008, in which the debtor listed assets of at least $100 million. Richards, Layton & Finger PA led all law firms last year, gaining 28 cases. Weil Gotshal was the runner-up with 25, and Kelley Drye & Warren LLP placed third with 24.

In Bankruptcy Insider ‘Deal doctors: April 23, 2009,’ a six-month rolling ranking on a specific role is detailed (http://pipeline.thedeal.com/tdd/ViewArticle.dl?id=10002260837).
Weil and Kirkland & Ellis LLP continue to reign supreme in large bankruptcy cases. The two firms each are debtor counsel or co-counsel in five of the 20 largest bankruptcies filed in the U.S. over the past six months. Weil finished second (five cases) and Kirkland third (two) when Bankruptcy Insider checked in September.
