Niemann was a managing director with Houlihan Lokey in its Chicago and Los Angeles offices. Earlier in his career, Niemann worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and practiced at Bryan Cave LLP in the corporate, banking, real estate and restructuring practices.
In Hong Kong, Merrill Lynch & Co. hired six bankers from Lehman Brothers Inc., including James Chapman, who becomes a director and head of Asia power investment banking. The other hires include vice presidents Anoop Chaudhry and Ken Ng; associates Raymond Yu and Robert Smith and analyst Brian Kelly. Japanese brokerage Nomura Holdings Inc. bought Lehman Brothers' Asia-Pacific units last week. Merrill is selling itself to Bank of America Corp. Amherst Securities Group LP, a broker-dealer specializing in residential mortgage-backed securities, hired six senior-level sales and trading professionals. They are: Craig Krandel from Merrill Lynch & Co.; Felix Partow, Washington Mutual Capital Corp.; Eli Goldschmiedt, J.P. Morgan Securities Inc.; Michael Scara and Michael Scanlon, both of Countrywide Capital Markets; and Konrad Kothmann, Bear Stearns Cos. Prior to Merrill, Krandel spent 20 years working in the MBS sector at Credit Suisse Group, Farm and Home Savings Association and Commonwealth Mortgage Corp. Partow was head of the adjustable-rate mortgages conduit and derivative desks at WaMu. Goldschmiedt also spent time at Prudential Securities Inc., now Pruco Securities LLC. Scara spent nine years at Countrywide and 19 at Merrill Lynch. Scanlon was vice president of fixed-income sales at Countrywide. And Kothmann spent 19 years at Bear Stearns as a managing director of institutional fixed-income structured product sales. Additionally, Amherst opened offices in New York and Santa Monica, Calif. In London, Piper Jaffray Ltd. hired two principals: Stuart Rankine in investment banking and Elizabeth Miller in institutional sales. Rankine was a vice president at Bear Stearns International Ltd., where he focused on merger and acquisition advisory and debt and equity financing, primarily for medical technology clients. Miller joins Piper from Thomas Weisel Partners Group Inc. Quadrangle Group LLC opened a Hong Kong office, headed by managing principal Edward Sippel. Prior to joining Quadrangle in 2007, Sippel was a managing director and partner at TVG Capital Partners Ltd., a private equity firm in Hong Kong focused on investments in the telecom, media and technology sectors throughout Asia. Real estate investment adviser ING Clarion Partners LLC opened an office in São Paulo. Florencio Beccar, who opened the Italy office and headed the firm's acquisition team in Spain, was named head of the new office. Also, Marcela Drigo will join managing director Beccar as a vice president. Drigo comes in from Capital Trust Inc., where she was responsible for its Brazilian investments. Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP announced that Paul Aronzon rejoined the firm as a partner. He will resume his role as co-practice group leader of the financial restructuring group, resident in Los Angeles. Aronzon was most recently head of restructuring advisory services and co-head of investment banking at Imperial Capital. Prior to that, he was a Milbank partner for 17 years. Venable LLP expanded its advertising and marketing practice, adding Thomas Cohn as of counsel in New York. Cohn is a 17-year veteran of the Federal Trade Commission, where he served as the director of the Northeast region. DLA Piper said Karl Tabbakh joined its Abu Dhabi office as a partner in the corporate practice. He covers domestic and international mergers and acquisitions, capital markets and joint ventures. Tabbakh was a partner in the business law group at Canadian law firm McCarthy Tétrault LLP. In New York, Michael Buchanan joined Jenner & Block LLP as a partner in the intellectual property and white-collar criminal defense and counseling practices. Before heading the securities and healthcare fraud unit, Buchanan was deputy chief of the criminal division of the New Jersey U.S. Attorney's Office and chief of its terrorism unit. Sandra Phillips joined Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP as a partner in Houston. Phillips, who was senior vice president and associate general counsel at pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc., will focus on complex litigation management and strategy. |
