JamesBurnellNugentBig.pngEvercore Partners Inc. enlisted James Burnell-Nugent as a strategic adviser, based in London. He was the commander-in-chief fleet of the Royal Navy until 2008. He joined the Royal Navy in 1971. Burnell-Nugent will work with both the advisory and recently established investment management businesses in Europe.

PCG Asset Management LLC tapped Jean-Noël Odier as a managing director. He focuses on international business development and will open an office in Singapore in early 2009. Odier worked for BNP Paribas SA in Hong Kong, where he was in charge of developing the wealth management platform for family offices and ultrahigh-net-worth individuals in Asia-Pacific. Before that, he was chief financial officer at Xytis Pharmaceuticals Ltd.


Altius Associates hired Jay Yoder as a partner and head of real assets, based in Richmond, Va.

Yoder will specialize in real assets and develop a fund-of-funds focused on energy, timber and infrastructure. He co-founded Tuckerbrook Alternative Investments LP.


Steptoe & Johnson LLP said its former chairman, J.A. Bouknight Jr., will rejoin the firm in Washington. He will resume his role as head of the electric power group. Bouknight was a Steptoe partner from 1994 to mid-2005. He served as the firm's chairman from 1998 to 2004. He was most recently executive vice president and general counsel of Edison International, the parent company of Southern California Edison Co.

Separately, Steptoe & Johnson hired Philip Khinda as a partner in its securities enforcement and litigation practice in Washington. Khinda was a partner with Ropes & Gray LLP, focusing on complex litigation and enforcement matters as well as corporate governance and regulatory counseling.

Also in Washington, senior Democratic strategist and former executive director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, James Bonham, joined the firm's government affairs and public policy practice as a managing director.


White & Case LLP hired five intellectual property attorneys from McDermott Will & Emery LLP.

The partners practiced in McDermott's IP, media and technology department. Jack Lever co-founded and served as global head of the department and most recently led its Asian practice.

The rest of the team includes Shamita Etienne-Cummings, David Tennant, Bijal Vakil and Jennifer Yokoyama. Lever, Etienne-Cummings and Tennant will work from Washington, while Vakil and Yokoyama will reside in Palo Alto, Calif.


Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP announced that hotel lawyers Heinz Bloch and Robert Schlup joined the firm as partners in Zurich, where it is opening an office.

They represent hotel owners and developers, private investors, financial institutions and hotel management companies on matters from mergers and acquisitions, real estate transactions and joint ventures to management contracts and lease transactions. Before creating Bloch & Partner, Bloch was development director and counsel for Hilton International and Swissôtel Hotels and Resorts.


DLA Piper created a joint venture with the international division of Al Wagayan, Al Awadhi & Al Saif, a Kuwait law firm that covers corporate, commercial, banking and finance, Islamic finance and projects. The joint venture will operate as DLA Piper Kuwait.


In New York, Bracewell & Giuliani LLP hired Marco Palmese as a partner in its corporate and securities practice. He focuses on mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and restructuring transactions. Palmese practiced at Latham & Watkins LLP.


Advisory firm LECG LLC appointed Michael Bandemer as electronic discovery practice leader for the Western region. Bandemer, a managing director in San Diego, will co-lead the U.S. electronic discovery practice. Patrick Kennedy was promoted to managing director, and Jonathan Atun and Michelle Mangan were named principals in San Diego. All three joined the firm in 2006.


In Chicago, Sunil George was named a director in the information technology transformation services practice of AlixPartners LLP. George arrives from eLoyalty Corp., where he was founder and leader of the services sector.


Covington & Burling LLP elected eight partners in Washington: John Bies, Steven Fagell and James Garland, litigation and white collar; Scott Cunningham and Scott Danzis, food and drug; antitrust attorney Derek Ludwin; litigator Benjamin Razi; and Emin Toro, tax.

Other partners include corporate lawyer Gregor Frizzell and privacy and data security attorney Daniel Cooper in London; corporate attorney Andrew Ment in New York; and San Francisco-based Amy Toro, corporate.


Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati PC hired Michael Sommer as a partner in its litigation practice in New York. He was a partner at McDermott Will & Emery LLP.
