In a boardroom shakeup, Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc announced that Stephen Hester (pictured), John McFarlane and Arthur Ryan were appointed non-executive directors of RBS, effective Oct. 1. Lawrence Fish and Charles Koch will retire as non-executive directors ahead of the annual general meeting in April.
Hester is CEO of British Land Co. plc. He served as chief operating officer and finance director of Abbey National plc and spent 19 years with Credit Suisse Group in roles including chief financial officer, global head of fixed income and co-head of European investment banking.
McFarlane retired in 2007 after serving 10 years as CEO of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. He worked at Standard Chartered plc and spent 18 years with Citibank Inc.
Ryan retired as chairman of Prudential Financial Inc. in May after 14 years with the company. He also spent 22 years at Chase Manhattan Bank.
Also on Oct. 1., Hester will retire from his deputy chairman role at Northern Rock plc.
Recently, Richard Griffiths, Ivan Li and Tammy Wan joined ABN Amro's mergers and acquisitions team as corporate executive directors and Michael Niederberger joined the corporate finance group as corporate director.

Financial holding company BB&T Corp. said longtime chief executive John Allison
will retire as CEO on Dec. 31. He will continue as chairman of the
board until Dec. 31, 2009. BB&T will promote chief operating
officer Kelly King to succeed Allison as CEO and president. BB&T has yet to name a successor to King as COO.
Allison has been CEO since 1989. King joined the firm in 1972.
Institutional Venture Partners added Elizabeth Weil and Michael McLean
to its investment team. Weil is a senior associate, focusing on
Internet and digital media investments. McLean is an associate,
covering communications and wireless investments. Before joining IVP,
Weil worked at Menlo Ventures, while McLean was with J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.'s investment banking division in San Francisco.
IVP also brought in Jules Maltz as a vice president. Previously, Maltz worked for 3i Group plc evaluating Internet, mobile and software investments.
Mark Lapman, Independence Investments LLC's chief executive
and chairman of the board, will retire after 26 years with the firm. He
was named CEO in 2000 and led the company through its sale to Convergent Capital in 2006. Boston-based Independence is searching for a new CEO with Lapman's help.
Maxim Group LLC, an investment banking, securities and wealth management firm, promoted James Siegel to co-general counsel and appointed Christopher Massey as assistant general counsel. Massey spent four years as an associate in the securities litigation department at Bressler Amery & Ross PC in New York.
MorrisAnderson & Associates Ltd. hired Craig Pace for its Chicago office as a consulting manager. Most recently, Pace was a principal with Walker Sands Communications.
Max Capital Group Ltd. named Kevin Werle as executive
vice president and chief risk officer. He most recently served as a
vice president responsible for risk management, information technology,
and quantitative research for New England Asset Management Inc., a unit
of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.'s General Re insurance Corp.
Gonzalez Saggio & Harlan LLP opened an office in New York, the firm's ninth. Philip Berg and Angela Dorn,
formerly of Berg & Dorn Law Partners, will join as managing
partners for the new office, adding to the real estate, employment and
corporate and transactional groups. Berg has practiced at Fletcher Asset Management and Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP and Primedia Inc., while Dorn has worked with Mayer Brown & Platt, now Mayer Brown LLP.
Bryant Robinson III joined Duane Morris LLP as a partner in its corporate practice group, resident in Washington. Robinson was formerly a partner at McGuireWoods LLP
and covers mergers and acquisitions, securities and corporate finance,
technology and telecommunications and commercial lending.
Bingham McCutchen LLP expanded its intellectual property practice, adding patent litigator Kurt Rogers as a partner in New York. Rogers comes in from Latham & Watkins LLP,
where he was a partner in the IP and technology practice. Bingham has
more than 115 litigators, patent prosecutors and transactional IP
lawyers.
K&L Gates LLP welcomed Neil Green as a partner in the firm's real estate practice. Green joins K&L Gates from Eversheds LLP, where he was London head of real estate development and regeneration.
Business law firm Thompson Hine LLP added an intellectual property practice to its Atlanta office, led by Beverly Lyman,
a partner in the firm's intellectual property and life sciences
practice groups. Lyman focuses on chemical, medical and life sciences
patent evaluation, enforcement, transactions and prosecution.
