Jefferies International Ltd. beefed up its global equities business, hiring 25 equity sales, sales-trading, trading and research professionals formerly of Bear, Stearns & Co. in London. Among those joining are Andrew Shortland as head of international equities, Hamish MacLellan as head of international equity sales and Omar Saad as head of international equity trading. Shortland spent 16 years at Bear, where he was a senior managing director, head of international equities trading and a member of the firm's management committee. Previously, he spent three years at Morgan Stanley in London and New York. MacLellan was a senior managing director at Bear, where he worked for 12 years. Saad spent five years at Bear and previously spent six years with ING Bank NV in London and New York. Additionally, equity research analysts Nick Bell and James Shuck join Jefferies to cover the European media and insurance industries, respectively. Bell was most recently a senior managing director and head of European media research at Bear, where he spent 10 years. Shuck was a vice president at Bear, where he spent seven years. Separately, Jefferies hired Mark Fisher as a managing director and head of European technology investment banking, and named Hugh Sandeman head of European telecom investment banking. Fisher was most recently a managing director and head of European technology investment banking at Citigroup Inc., where he worked for eight years. Before joining Jefferies last year, Sandeman was head of business development for India at the London Stock Exchange. Previously, he spent 18 years as an investment banker at Dresdner Kleinwort and Merrill Lynch & Co. in New York, Tokyo, London and Frankfurt.
Investment and technology development firm D.E. Shaw Group said Richard McKinney joined D.E. Shaw & Co. LP as a managing director to head its new asset-backed securities unit. Rocky Kurita joined the firm in July from Deutsche Bank AG as a senior vice president and will work with McKinney in the new endeavor. McKinney joins from Lehman Brothers Inc., where he headed the securitized products business for the past year. He managed multiple trading groups within the mortgage and asset-backed areas during his 15-year career at Lehman. In early August, the firm hired Christopher Zaback as chief financial officer and a managing director. He replaced Stuart Steckler, a managing director and a member of the executive committee, who retains responsibility for most firmwide infrastructure. Zaback arrived from Sandelman Partners LP, where he was co-chief operating officer and previously CFO. Prior to that, he was a director and co-head of the middle office of Moore Capital Management LLC and a vice president in the equities division at Goldman, Sachs & Co. ING Real Estate will make Robert Houston chairman and CEO of its global investment management business, replacing David Blight, who is returning to Australia for family reasons. Stephen Pyne, currently U.K. chief investment officer, becomes global portfolio manager, responsible for global cross border investment in the group. Kevin Aitchison, head of the U.K.'s segregated account and joint venture business, will succeed Houston as CEO in the U.K. Houston will remain chairman of the U.K. real estate investment management business. Gerard Kneppers is now a partner in DLA Piper's finance and projects group in the Netherlands. He joins from Dutch law firm De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek. Kneppers will lead the leveraged finance practice, working closely with finance and projects location head Bart Joosen. DLA Piper hired Daniel Lee, a Korean mergers and acquisitions specialist, for its corporate group, based in Tokyo. Lee hails from Kim & Chang in Seoul, where he was senior foreign counsel. Seyfarth Shaw LLP added partners Mark Coffin and Elaine Tippitt to its corporate practice group, based in Houston. Both were partners with Adams and Reese LLP. Coffin focuses on general corporate, securities, mergers and acquisitions, and health law. Tippitt covers corporate, securities law and M&A. In Dubai, Tim Ross joined Latham & Watkins LLP as a partner. Ross covers high value syndicated loans, acquisition finance, private equity and restructuring transactions. At Linklaters LLP, he oversaw the Middle East banking practice. Clifford Chance US LLP announced that Robert Smith is joining its tax practice as a partner in New York. Smith covers acquisitions and divestitures, financial products, corporate restructurings, domestic and cross-border project financing, and real estate. Smith had practiced at Linklaters LLP, which he joined in 1998. He was a partner with White & Case LLP, Coudert Brothers LLP and Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP. Withers Bergman LLP tapped two attorneys for its Greenwich, Conn., office. Partner Jeffrey Blomberg and senior counsel William Harnisch arrive from Pullman & Comley LLC. Blomberg focuses on private equity, mergers and acquisitions, venture capital, securities, private placements, debt finance and business organizations. Harnisch covers tax law. Briggs and Morgan PA elected three shareholders: Business litigator Kevin Decker; Julie Drewes, financial institutions and real estate; and Margaret Goetze, business litigation section and financial markets. |
