Merrill Lynch & Co. appointed Hugh Sullivan as head of investment banking, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He is also global head of multi industries and will work from Frankfurt and London. Sullivan reports to Andrea Orcel, global head of origination and president of global markets and investment banking.
Sullivan joined Merrill in 1997 and replaces Flavio Valeri, who is leaving to work in the Italian banking industry. Sullivan began his investment banking career in the mergers and acquisitions group at First Boston Corp.
Private equity firm CVC Capital Partners, which has operations in Hong Kong, opened an office Beijing. CVC recruited Zhu Wei as a managing director and head of the office. Zhu was a managing director of Goldman Sachs Gao Hua Securities Ltd. He was also a member of Goldman, Sachs & Co.'s China investment banking operation committee and headed Goldman's Shanghai coverage. RBC Capital Markets hired Michael Baumrin, Peter Nolden, Mina Choo, Derek McGreal and Lorry Palacios for its municipal finance housing capital group. Baumrin serves as co-head of the housing finance group along with Helen Feinberg, who joined RBC upon its acquisition of William R. Hough & Co. in 2004. All arrive from UBS. Baumrin and Nolden join as managing directors, Choo and McGreal as directors and Palacios as a vice president. Baumrin is based in New York, while the others work in San Francisco. Baumrin, who was head of UBS' housing group and joined the firm nine years ago, also spent 18 years at Merrill Lynch & Co. New York-based alternative asset management company AM Investment Partners hired the merger arbitrage team from Robeco Investment Management. Four professionals, including Arthur Levy, will join AM, bringing with them about $100 million under management. Dahlman Rose & Co. LLC, an investment bank covering the natural resource supply chain sectors, enlisted James Manfredonia as a managing director and head of equities. Manfredonia was a senior managing director at Bear, Stearns & Co., where he was responsible for the cash trading desk and other asset management functions. He also spent a decade with Merrill Lynch & Co. D.A. Davidson & Co. opened an equity capital markets office in Boston. William Boyle becomes managing director and head of Boston operations. Joining him are James Smith Jr. and Ryan Murphy, vice presidents and senior sales traders. Also working with the team is Joseph Pattison, vice president of equity sales, who is based in Portland, Ore. Boyle has managed and operated trading desks in Boston for Needham & Co. LLC, NationsBanc Montgomery Securities LLC and Lehman Brothers Inc. for the last 16 years. Smith previously worked with Schwab Capital Markets LP. Murphy worked at RBC Capital Markets. Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP named William Fasel a director in its reorganization services group in Chicago. Fasel was previously a managing director with Mesirow Financial Holdings Inc. Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP announced that Charles Falconer joined its London office as senior counsel. Most recently, Falconer served as the first Secretary of State for Justice and as Lord Chancellor of Great Britain. He also held various senior positions in the 10-year administration of former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair. Before entering public service, Falconer was a commercial barrister with Fountain Court Chambers from 1974 to 1997, becoming a Queen's Counsel in 1991. Daniel Shapiro and Alais Griffin joined Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP's Chicago office as partners in its litigation and dispute resolution practice. Before this, they practiced in Goldberg Kohn Bell Black Rosenbloom & Moritz Ltd.'s litigation group. Shapiro was a principal and senior partner, as well as chair of Goldberg Kohn's class action defense group. Kaye Scholer LLP said James Blank joined its intellectual property practice group as a partner in New York. Blank, a patent litigator, was a partner in Latham & Watkins LLP's IP and technology practice group. Seyfarth Shaw LLP said Jon Meer joined its Los Angeles office as a partner. Meer was chair of DLA Piper's Los Angeles labor and employment practice. Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold LLP added three attorneys to its Houston office: Special counsel Joseph Larsen and associates Jacob De Leon and Collin Warren. Larsen is a member of the media, entertainment and sports law practice. He also covers business litigation and bankruptcy, and joins from Ogden, Gibson, Broocks & Longoria LLP. De Leon, formerly of McFall, Breitbeil & Shults PC, focuses on business and commercial litigation, construction and insurance coverage. Warren, formerly of Germer Gertz LLP, provides litigation defense for insurance coverage, securities and antitrust, commercial transactions, bad faith claims, and workers' compensation and nonsubscriber claims. |
