Luc François, former head of equities at Société Générale SA, will join Morgan Stanley as global head of equity derivatives and head of European equities in September, a spokesperson confirmed.

From Bear Stearns Cos., Thomas Wong will run proprietary trading and Eric Cole will co-head distressed sales, trading and research.

From Merrill Lynch & Co., James Brown was hired to lead commodities risk. Also, Chris Iannaccone of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. was tapped as a senior chemicals banker and Citigroup Inc.'s Michael Eck was hired for Morgan Stanley's retail investment banking business.

Daniel Cornell joined Jefferies Group Inc.'s Jefferies Quarterdeck as a managing director in aerospace and defense investment banking. Previously, he was a Stifel, Nicolaus & Co. managing director.

Separately, Jefferies & Co. hired Frank Merola as a managing director in the recapitalization and restructuring group of the investment banking division. Merola spent over 20 years as an attorney with Stutman, Treister & Glatt PC, a Los Angeles boutique law firm.


In Boston, SL Capital Partners LLP appointed Jamie Ebersole as a senior investment director of private equity in North America. Ebersole previously worked for Allianz Private Equity Partners, where he was head of the New York office.


Tom Levy has joined the D.E. Shaw Group as senior counterparty relationship manager. Previously, he was a managing director, global head of client coverage and co-head of global prime brokerage sales at Morgan Stanley.


Broadpoint Securities Group Inc. broker-dealer subsidiary, Broadpoint Securities Inc., announced four new hires in its mortgage and asset backed division, Broadpoint Descap.

Richard Weissman joins as a managing director with a specialization in MBS and ABS sales from RBS Greenwich Capital. Maneesh Awasthi moves from Citigroup Inc., where he oversaw the CDO Squared platform on the structuring side. Ekaterina Baron will serve as a senior vice president and previously worked for General Electric Co.'s GE Capital and Barclays Capital with a focus on ABS and other structured products. Viru Raparthi worked previously as a senior structurer and CDO banker at Rabobank International.


Capital Z Asset Management has added James Marrone as a partner and chief marketing officer. Before joining the emerging hedge funds sponsor, Marrone was a senior managing director at Bear Stearns Asset Management.


Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo PC formed a consumer product safety commission practice group. The group, headed by Chuck Samuels, comprises nearly a dozen practitioners from the Washington, New York, Boston and California offices. They cover product liability litigation, insurance litigation and federal regulatory issues.


Restructuring and advisory firm AlixPartners LLP announced two hires in its Southfield, Mich., office: Jay Kreindler was named director and associate general counsel, and Brian Paluk was made finance manager.

Kreindler moves from Champion Enterprises Inc., where he was associate general counsel and assistant secretary. Paluk worked in operations finance with American Axle & Manufacturing Inc.


Early-stage venture firm Voyager Capital named Daniel Ahn a managing director in its Menlo Park, Calif., office. He will focus on technology investments. He spent the last nine years with Woodside Fund and was a managing director.


Alston & Bird LLP is expanding in California. Los Angeles firm Weston Benshoof Rochefort Rubalcava & MacCuish LLP and its 83 attorneys will join the firm, effective Sept. 1. Allston is also opening an office in Silicon Valley. IP litigation attorneys Yitai Hu, Sean DeBruine and Steve Hemminger, among others, join the Silicon Valley office from Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP. In addition, Randall Allen, the former chair of the firm's litigation and trial practice unit, will move to the Bay Area.


Arnold & Porter LLP added two healthcare attorneys to its New York office. Partner Jeffrey Ruggiero and counsel Andrew Bogen join from Arent Fox LLP's New York office.


Jim Lechner Jr. has joined White & Case LLP's litigation group as a partner in New York. Lechner is a former U.S. district court judge and was a partner with boutique intellectual property firm Lerner David Littenberg Krumholz & Mentlik LLP.


Fulbright & Jaworski LLP added Debbi Johnstone to the firm's health law practice as a partner in Houston. Most recently, she was a partner with Vinson & Elkins LLP's health law practice.


Legal search firm Major, Lindsey & Africa named Sarah Minifie Wolfgang a managing director in Boston. She was previously a director with a national recruiting firm.
