At the end of August, Bear Stearns Cos. CEO Alan Schwartz will leave J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. to pursue other interests. Schwartz joined Bear Stearns in 1976 and became executive vice president and head of the investment banking division in 1985. In 2001, Schwartz became co-president and co-chief operating officer. He took over as CEO in January.
Reports said Schwartz may go to Goldman, Sachs & Co., Citigroup Inc., Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. or Centerview Partners LLC.
Wachovia Corp. is looking for a chief risk officer, and Donald Truslow will retire once a successor is named. Truslow joined Wachovia in 1980 and was treasurer and comptroller before becoming CRO in 2000. The company also seeks a chief financial officer. Thomas Wurtz is stepping down after two and a half years in the role and another seven as treasurer. Wurtz will depart when the company names a successor. Also at Wachovia, William Bourbeau was named wealth management director for Wachovia Wealth Management in Florida. Bourbeau, who spent 15 years at Merrill Lynch & Co., was most recently head of Bank of America Corp.'s premier banking and investment group in Florida. The bank also named Carlos Evans as a wholesale banking executive, responsible for leading the commercial, business, community, government and institutional banking segments. He will continue to lead the dealer business. Also in July, Wachovia hired Robert Steel as president and CEO; Chris Morris joined Wachovia Securities LLC as a managing director and head of food and beverage investment banking; and retail banker Michael Phalen joined Wachovia Securities as a managing director. Fotis Hasiotis and Philip Noblet were appointed co-heads of Merrill Lynch & Co.'s EMEA financial sponsors group. Hasiotis will relocate from New York to London. Noblet was deputy head of European mergers and acquisitions and head of M&A for EMEA financial sponsors. Also, David Melvin was named chairman of EMEA financial sponsors and leveraged finance, while Jeff Kaplan became global head of financial sponsors. Kaplan joined Merrill in 1987. Middle market investment bank Dresner Partners named Richard Wottrich a managing director, helping serve international clients through IMAP, an organization of merger and acquisition advisory firms. Wottrich was a managing director and president of DSI Global M&A, an M&A advisory firm he founded in 1992. Northern Trust has made three hires across its product management and operations groups. John Hannon was appointed EMEA head of investment operations outsourcing. Andrew Lelliott joins as head of U.K. transfer agency and Sascha Calisan was hired as a product manager for fund administration in EMEA. All three are based in London. Hannon comes from State Street Corp., where he was head of investment operations. Lelliott joins from International Financial Data Services and Calisan comes to Northern Trust from RBC Dexia. Christopher Smith joined the corporate advisory group of Seabury Group LLC. He joins as a managing director and will establish an airport advisory group, based in London. Smith most recently was a managing director of SH&E Ltd. Doug Cameron is now a managing director and chief science adviser at Piper Jaffray & Co. Cameron was chief scientific officer at Khosla Ventures and director of biotechnology at Cargill Inc. Fort Lauderdale, Fla., investment bank Farlie Turner & Co. hired associates Frank Paulet and Kerensa Iraha and analyst Misha Cvetkovic. Paulet was an associate in the mergers and acquisitions department of Mitsubishi UFJ Securities. Iraha joined Farlie Turner from New York merchant and investment bank Paragon Capital Partners LLC. O'Melveny & Myers LLP announced that Mark Fairbairn will join its Hong Kong office as a partner in restructuring and finance. He was a partner with White & Case LLP. Fairbairn covers distressed and alternative high-yield investments, restructuring and insolvency. Chicago's Arnstein & Lehr LLP hired Michelle Novick as a partner in its bankruptcy, creditors' rights and restructuring practice group. She arrives from Thomson Coburn LLP. James Maxson joined the Atlanta office of Morris, Manning & Martin LLP. Maxson will co-chair the new life settlements group alongside partner Ward Bondurant. Maxson was executive vice president and general counsel of Habersham Funding LLC. Legal search firm Major, Lindsey & Africa added Tam Pham as a managing director in its associate practice group, based in Palo Alto, Calif. Pham has practiced at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP. |
