SylviaBarnesMovers.pngSMH Capital Markets brought in Sylvia Barnes as a managing director and group head of its energy investment banking practice, based in Houston.

Barnes was a managing director at Merrill Lynch & Co.'s energy investing banking practice.


A Wall Street Journal report said telecom rainmaker George H. "Woody" Young III is leaving Bank of America Corp.'s Merrill Lynch. Two years ago, Young abruptly departed Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. after disagreements with then-CEO Dick Fuld over his management status.

Later, in September, just before the BofA-Merrill deal and Lehman's bankruptcy, Young arrived at Merrill's New York office as global head of technology, media and telecommunications investment banking.

Private equity firm Diamond Castle Holdings LLC said William Drewry joined as an operating partner and chairman of media investments. He was a managing director in the global media group at UBS Investment Bank. Drewry was previously global head of media equity research at Credit Suisse Group.


Healthcare venture capital firm Thomas, McNerney & Partners hired Michael DeMane as a senior adviser in Minneapolis. From 2000 to 2008, DeMane worked at Medtronic Inc., most recently as its chief operating officer.

Also this week, former Medtronic chairman and CEO Arthur Collins Jr. went to Oak Hill Capital Partners LP as a senior adviser.


Cooley Godward Kronish LLP announced that Kristen Kercher joined the firm as a partner in the mergers and acquisitions group. Kercher was a partner at Heller Ehrman LLP. Kercher represents publicly traded and privately held companies in both domestic and cross-border M&A and other strategic partnering transactions.

Cooley advised on several big deals over the last several months, including Brocade Communications Systems Inc.'s $2.5 billion acquisition of Foundry Networks Inc. and Gilead Sciences Inc.'s pending $1.4 billion acquisition of CV Therapeutics Ltd.


Alvarez & Marsal hired nine advisers in its European financial institutions advisory services team.

Managing director Naeem Bashir Ahmad was previously chief administrative officer of the transaction banking unit of ABN Amro Bank NV in Asia-Pacific. He is now part of the team responsible for restructuring Lehman Brothers Holdings International across Europe.

Aljosja van Dorssen, a managing director in the Netherlands, worked at McKinsey & Co. Senior director Bruce Matthews joins from Singer & Friedlander. Senior director Steve Franck was with Morgan Stanley. Senior adviser Hans Patyne was a managing director at TriOptima. Director Adrian Teng joins from ABN, where he was head of transaction services products for Greater China. Director Roger Page also joins from ABN. Director Ajay Rawal was head of retention and secured lending for HBOS plc (now Lloyds Banking Group plc). Associate Eimear Creaven worked at Allied Irish Bank in New York and Dublin.

Separately, in transaction advisory services, managing director Geoff Weber and senior director Jimmy Suruki relocated to San Francisco and Mark Gailys and Casey Winters joined as managers in Los Angeles. Gailys was with Beacon Partners, a private equity-backed search fund where he covered acquisition sourcing and deal execution. Winters was a manager in the transaction services practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he handled financial due diligence projects for private equity and corporate sponsors.


Latham & Watkins LLP said Alexander Cohen rejoined the firm's corporate department as a partner in Washington and as co-chair of the corporate finance practice, specializing in securities regulation and enforcement. Cohen returns to Latham from the Securities and Exchange Commission, where he was deputy general counsel for legal policy and administrative practice and, more recently, deputy chief of staff.


Shearman & Sterling LLP said D. Kevin Dolan, formerly a senior vice president and senior tax counsel at Merrill Lynch & Co., joined the firm as of counsel, working from Washington and New York.

Before joining Merrill in 2000, Dolan was head of the Washington tax practice at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP. Earlier, he worked at the Internal Revenue Service and held staff attorney positions at the Treasury Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission.


Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP added six partners from Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP to its FDA/healthcare regulation practice: Joyce Cowan, Kathleen McDermott, John Rah, Albert Shay, Howard Young and Reece Hirsch. Hirsch works from San Francisco, while the rest practice in Washington.


Fran Townsend, who was the top homeland security adviser to former President George W. Bush for nearly four years, joined Baker Botts LLP as a partner in the Washington. Townsend will lead a global security and corporate risk counseling practice, focusing on homeland and national security matters.


Corporate turnaround consultancy CRG Partners hired Sheon Karol as a partner at its New York headquarters. He had been a managing director for turnaround firms Mesirow Financial Consulting and XRoads Solutions Group LLC.
