Herzog (pictured) served as a senior vice president and comptroller since June 2005. He joined American General Corp. in February 2000 and, following the AIG acquisition of American General in 2001, was named chief operating officer for the combined domestic life insurance companies. Steven Bensinger, who since May was vice chairman of financial services and acting CFO, left AIG to pursue other opportunities.
Matthew Layton, co-head of Clifford Chance LLP's London corporate finance/mergers and acquisitions group, will become global head of the firm's corporate practice in November. Layton has been a Clifford Chance partner since 1991. The corporate practice has 820 legal advisers worldwide. Shearman & Sterling LLP expanded its Bay Area mergers and acquisitions group and corporate practice, adding partners Michael Kennedy, Steve Camahort and Michael Dorf. All return to the firm from O'Melveny & Myers LLP in San Francisco. The returning M&A team specializes in technology and private equity. Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP tapped Michael Zinder as a partner in the corporate and financial services department in New York. He will serve as co-chair of the banking/debt finance practice group alongside partner William Hiller. Zinder was a partner with Shearman & Sterling LLP. Cross-border merger and acquisition attorney Mark Crofskey joined McDermott Will & Emery LLP. Crofskey joins the firm from the London office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. In Munich, Latham & Watkins LLP hired Thomas Fox as a partner in the tax department. Fox focuses on tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions and private equity transactions, fund formation, REITs and reorganizations. Fox joins Latham & Watkins from Shearman & Sterling LLP. Former New York State Assistant Attorney General Sally Blinken joined Venable LLP's national nonprofit law practice. Since 2007, Blinken was special counsel with the Public Integrity Bureau under Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. Alvarez & Marsal Holdings LLC expanded its public sector group, hiring Carl Kiefer as a managing director. Before A&M, Kiefer was founder and president of Government Strategy Group Inc. Previously, Kiefer was a partner with the public sector services practice of Accenture Ltd. Barlow Lyde & Gilbert LLP appointed David Jabbari as an equity partner and the firm's first chief operating officer, working closely with CEO Clint Evans. Jabbari will join BLG in February from Allen & Overy LLP, where he is an associate director and global head of knowledge management. Arent Fox LLP said Les Jacobowitz joined its New York office as a partner in the real estate and finance practices. He was a partner in the finance and real estate group at Dechert LLP. Corporate attorney Gregg Davison joined Pinsent Masons LLP as a partner, specializing in private equity. He is based in Manchester and joins from Hammonds LLP. In New York, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati PC added Michael Faber as a partner in its tax practice, covering business transactions. He is the former chair of Heller Ehrman LLP's tax department. Christopher Ocasal joined Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP as a partner in its tax group, resident in Washington. Ocasal was an international tax partner in the Washington office of PricewaterhouseCoopers. Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP hired Michael Cohen from Heller Ehrman LLP, as a partner in Washington. Cohen focuses on criminal and civil antitrust litigation, as well as merger clearance and civil conduct investigations before the Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission. Tannenbaum Helpern Syracuse & Hirschtritt LLP brought in Ron Rubin as counsel in its litigation department. Rubin will work in the regulatory investigations group, focusing on Securities and Exchange Commission and Financial Industry Regulatory Authority inspections and investigations. Rubin has been senior special counsel in the enforcement division of the SEC and senior special counsel in the New York Stock Exchange's rule and interpretive standards unit. Ungaretti & Harris LLP elected three lawyers to its partnership. Kamau Coar and Keith Edeus Jr. are litigators and Julie Treumann practices in the corporate, securities and finance department.
