MorganKeeganHires111808.pngMorgan Keegan & Co. hired nine municipal banking, sales and trading professionals in New York and Boston. They join investment banking veteran Mike Tierney, who was hired last year as a managing director after a 27-year career at Goldman, Sachs & Co.

Donald O'Brien joins as a managing director, senior municipal underwriter. He spent the past 21 years at Morgan Stanley, most recently as a managing director in the global capital markets division. Senior vice president Chris Durso, a municipal trader, is a 23-year veteran of Bear Stearns Cos.

Managing director Joseph Tait, national housing group, was an executive director at UBS. Robert Coven of UBS, arrived as a managing director, public finance banking. Alexander Shih is a first vice president in public finance banking. He spent a decade with UBS, most recently working in municipal securities. Rick Simonsen, senior vice president, municipal sales, comes in from Banc of America Securities LLC.

J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.'s William Hannan and Bear Stearns' Garrett Ferris were tapped as vice presidents in municipal sales. Kiran Patel, formerly with J.P. Morgan Securities Inc., was hired as an associate vice president in municipal sales.

Simonsen works in Boston, while the rest reside in New York.

Evercore Partners Inc. launched Evercore Wealth Management and brought in Jeff Maurer, former chairman and CEO of U.S. Trust Corp., as a senior adviser. EWM will focus on clients with more than $5 million in investable assets.

Maurer joined U.S. Trust in 1970, was named president in 1990, chief operating officer in 1994, CEO in 2001 and was named chairman in 2002. In 2003, Maurer joined Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. as chairman and CEO of Lehman Brothers Trust Co. and remained with the firm through 2007.

Joining Maurer in launching EWM will be Gary Gildersleeve, James Holihan and Sandy Panetta, partners and fixed-income portfolio managers; John McDermott, partner and equity portfolio manager; John Rendinaro, partner and operations and trading manager; and Karen Francois, partner and client services manager. Gildersleeve, Holihan and Panetta come in from Bank of America Corp.'s Columbia Management unit. Other equity portfolio managers and wealth consultants will join EWM when their current employment obligations expire at the end of the year.


KeyBanc Capital Markets Inc. hired Thomas King as a managing director. Based in Chicago, he will lead Key's financial sponsor coverage efforts. King was a managing director with CIT Investment Banking Services, where he was a founding member of the firm's mergers and acquisitions effort.

Emissary Capital Group LLC, a merchant banking firm focused on China and India, tapped Albert Lee as a managing director and head of research. Lee joins the New York office from Maxim Group LLC, where he was the small-cap China and special situations senior equity research analyst.


Real estate operating and investment firm Watt Cos. made two hires to lead its acquisition activities. John Lee joined Watt Realty Advisors as a vice president responsible for office acquisitions. Kenneth Hira joins Watt Commercial Properties. Lee was previously a senior vice president and West Coast acquisitions officer at Lowe Enterprises. Hira worked at Pacific Century Group.


Workplace law firm Jackson Lewis LLP opened an office in San Diego. Resident partner Paul Sorrentino will head it, joined by associate Jennifer Santa Maria.


Life sciences government affairs specialist Susie Ahn joined Foley Hoag LLP. Previously, Ahn was director of federal government relations for Washington-based Biotechnology Industry Organization.


Intellectual property lawyer Richard Penfold joined the London office of Brown Rudnick LLP as a partner in the corporate group.

Penfold, who arrives from Heller Ehrman LLP, also practiced at DLA Piper.


Complex litigator Tony Chen joined Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP as a partner in the firm's intellectual property practice. He will split his time between the Los Angeles and Shanghai offices. Chen arrives from Bingham McCutchen LLP.


Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP named 15 partners, effective Jan. 1: Scott Alberino, financial restructuring; corporate attorneys David Antheil, Andrei Danilov, Natasha Kohne and Aaron Scow; Jessica Cherry, ERISA and executive compensation; litigators Jeffery Dailey, Kevin Rising and Jesse Weiss; Robert Griffin Jr. and Leon Hirth, investment funds; Patrick Hurley, energy and global transactions; Todd Landis, intellectual property; Nathan Oleson, labor and employment; and Irene Steiner, tax.


Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP elected three partners for January: corporate attorneys Alyssa Caples and Minh Van Ngo; and tax lawyer Jennifer Conway.
