EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
  • Andrew Bracey joined Jefferies International in London as a managing director
  • HSBC hired Jamey Hubbs as head of debt capital markets, Canada
  • BNP Paribas shuffled its top brass
BNP Paribas SA made a number of appointments, effective Sept. 1. Jean-Laurent Bonnafé will manage BNP's retail banking activities and become co-chief operating officer alongside Georges Chodron de Courcel. Pierre Mariani, a member of the executive committee, becomes senior executive vice president and co-head of retail banking while continuing to head the international retail services core business.

Fabio Gallia will be proposed as chief executive of Banco Nazionale del Lavoro. François Villeroy de Galhau, currently chairman and CEO of BNP Paribas Personal Finance, will become head French retail banking member of the group executive committee. Bruno Salmon and Thierry Laborde will be appointed chairman and CEO of BNP Paribas Personal Finance, respectively.

Philippe Bordenave, head of group finance and development and member of the executive committee, will become senior executive vice president of BNP Paribas.

Michel Konczaty, head of group risk management, will be added to the executive committee. Vivien Levy-Garboua will be named a senior adviser to BNP Paribas. He succeeds Dominique Hoenn, who retires at year's end.

Jefferies Group Inc. announced that Andrew Bracey joined Jefferies International Ltd. in London as a managing director to lead its consumer and retail investment banking division in Europe and Asia.

Most recently, Bracey was a managing director at Barclays Capital, where he focused on principal investments. Before that, he was a managing director working on U.K. and European mergers and acquisitions at Credit Suisse Group. He began his career in investment banking at Swiss Bank Corp., now part of UBS.

Jefferies & Co. recently appointed Alec Ellison as co-head of investment banking. Ellison, chairman of the technology, media and telecommunications investment banking effort, will partner with existing co-heads Chris Kanoff and David Weaver. Ellison, based in New York, joined Jefferies in 2003 as part of the firm's acquisition of Broadview International, which he joined in 1988 and was appointed president of in 2001.

Ellison will join Kanoff in leading the U.S. investment banking practice.


HSBC plc appointed Jamey Hubbs as a managing director and head of debt capital markets, Canada. Hubbs joins HSBC from TD Securities, where he was most recently head of European origination and syndication, based in London.


Merk Investments LLC announced today that William Poole, the former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, has accepted a position as the mutual fund company's senior economic adviser.


Stephan Haeringer, Rolf Meyer, Peter Spuhler and Lawrence Weinbach will resign from the UBS board on Oct. 2. Replacements will be proposed before the date arrives. Also, Sergio Marchionne was named a senior independent director and continues as the non-executive vice chairman.


Dykema Gossett PLLC will add 53 attorneys from Schwartz Cooper Chartered to its Chicago office, effective July 14. The combination gives Dykema nearly 130 lawyers in Chicago.


Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP said Lorenzo Borgogni and Ivan Presant joined the firm as partners in its mergers and acquisitions practice group. Borgogni also covers debt and equity securities transactions and advises on corporate governance matters and restructuring transactions. Presant has also advised on intellectual property and licensing issues. Both join from Greenberg Traurig LLP.


Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP will open an office in São Paulo in the fall, subject to Brazilian approval. Corporate partners Todd Crider and Jaime Mercado would lead the office and be supported by partners Glenn Reiter, David Williams, George Miller and John Ericson in New York and by Bill Brentani in Palo Alto, Calif.


On July 30, tax lawyer Gary Bornholdt will join Nixon Peabody LLP's public finance practice as counsel in Washington. Bornholdt served for the past four years as legislation counsel to the Joint Committee on Taxation.


Bruce Baty joined Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP as a partner in its national insurance regulatory practice. He comes to Sonnenschein from Stinson Morrison Hecker LLP, where he was co-chair of the business litigation group. Baty is joined by associate Jodi Hoss in Kansas City, Mo.


Akerman Senterfitt welcomed Sheila McDevitt to its corporate group as of counsel in Tampa. McDevitt joins from her own consulting firm, Sheila M. McDevitt PL. Prior to that, she worked for TECO Energy Inc. for 26 years, most recently as senior vice president, general counsel and chief legal officer.


Grant Thornton LLP promoted Paul Beecy to partner-in-charge of transaction advisory services, tax. Also, Fred Astrauskas joined the Boston team as executive director of transaction advisory services.
