Movers & shakers: Aug. 20, 2009

Christopher Bae and Thomas Gillie will become managing directors and co-heads of global foreign exchange options at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in October. They will report to Chris Vogel, head of G-10 currency trading.

Bae joins from Goldman, Sachs & Co., where he worked for 10 years, most recently as a managing director in the equity derivatives trading group. He had worked in currency options trading. Gillie hails from Credit Suisse Group, where he worked for more than 10 years. In 2000, he was appointed head of the Asia FX business and subsequently assumed responsibility for FX structuring and FX sales. He belonged to the Asian fixed-income management committee.


AlexanderApponyiMovers.pngBrookfield Asset Management Inc. added five senior vice presidents to a team headed by London-based Leo van den Thillart, managing partner, private equity funds group.

In London, Peter Thomson will cover the U.K. and Middle East. Earlier, he was a managing director of the private funds group at Bear, Stearns & Co. before moving to J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.

In Munich, Robert von Herrmann will cover continental Europe, focusing on German-speaking countries. He also worked at J.P. Morgan and Bear.

In Hong Kong, Paul Tam will cover Asia. He was a managing director at Bear, J.P. Morgan and a partner of Crane Capital Associates.

Alexander Apponyi (pictured), based in London, will cover Scandinavian and Benelux countries. Since 2005, he was a partner at BerchWood Partners, where he set up its London office. He was previously at UBS Investment Bank, where he helped set up the European PE placement group. In New York, Scott White will be responsible for deal execution and project management. He was head of deal execution and deal manager responsible for capital raising assignments at Citi Alternative Investments.

Freddie Mac appointed Bruce Witherell as chief operating officer, effective Sept. 14.

RBC Capital Markets hired Marc Fleischman as a managing director and head of hedge fund sales, Europe.
